Uk Car Insurance With Non-eu Named Driver

Hi, i'm having problems getting my boyfriend insured on my car as a named driver.
I'm currently in the UK and moving to Swizterland next week. My boyfriend is already living and working in Switzerland, though he doesn't have a car in Switzerland at the moment so we want to drive mine over for a few months to bring all my belongings and help purchase furniture etc.. We'll take it back to the UK at Christmas.

I've found several insurers who will issue me with a green card for 90 days and which i can then extend at a later date. However, my boyfriend has a non-Eu driving licence and all the insurers i've spoken to so far won't add him as a named driver as he's not UK resident.
Has anyone overcome a similar problem or suggest who to try??
Thanks!!

Could he take his non eu licence to the authorities and change it for a swiss one. We did that last week and it only took three days to get them back.

If your boyfriend has a licence that can be transferred without having to retake a test in the UK then you might be able to use this as an argument with the insurance company.

I had a similar problem with my Irish insurance company, they would not put my Swiss girlfriend on my policy as a named driver. I told them that as I live in Switzerland I would have to change my licence... and what they are basically telling me is that they won't insure me because I have a Swiss licence. They said no that I once had an Irish licence so I'd be ok... ...Then I said that my Swiss girlfriend can move to Ireland and immediately get an Irish licence, would they insure her then... The answer... Yes.

So I asked... why will you insure me with a Swiss licence... and my Girlfriend with an Irish licence that she can just get over night without a test.... But not the same person before changing the licence.

The confused person at the other end of the phone said she'd call me back.

45 mins later the phone rang. They would insure my girlfriend as a named driver... No Charge!!!

Maybe I was lucky, but if your boyfriend has a licence that can be converted to a UK one without any test this route may work.

Re: Uk Car Insurance With Non-eu Named Driver

Hi, my boyfriends licence is from Serbia/Montenegro so no he cannot exchange it for a UK one without doing a test.
With regards to Switzerland, he did used to drive there and had to do the "Kontrolfahrt" after a year, but (somehow?!?) failed it and his licence is now "ungultig" in Switzerland only. He can still drive if we have an L plate and me besides him, which is kind of ironic as he's a much better driver than me and is used to the "wrong side" of the road!
Still, the problem now is not Switzerland but the fact I need some help driving Uk through France to Switz' and just need to get him named on my UK insurance.
thanks for your replies x

Re: Uk Car Insurance With Non-eu Named Driver

In case this helps anyone else:

Liverpool Victoria (LV) have insured me and my non-UK resident non EU boyfriend on my UK car.
I have chosen a package which includes 180 days European Cover (+Switzerland) fully comp' including European breakdown. This will take me up to Christmas when i'll take my car back to UK and hopefully will have purchased a Swiss car by then.

Ibk
