Insurance for items in storage in the US

Has anyone had any luck getting insurance for items they have in storage in the States? Since we no longer rent in the US we had to cancel our old renter's insurance (through Liberty Mutual) which normally would cover items in storage. Right now we just have the de facto insurance through the storage company for a measly $2000 total, and we'd like to supplement this with some sort of realistic insurance policy. Is anyone familiar with a US insurance company that will provide insurance even while living abroad, or, conversely with a Swiss-based insurance company that will insure items owned overseas?

Thanks!

Re: Insurance for items in storage in the US

Our storage was arranged through the moving company, so we had insurance through them covering full replacement value of the stuff in storage. IIRC it was part and parcel of the whole move insurance. Is that a possibility for you?

Re: Insurance for items in storage in the US

When I moved over here I donated quite a bit to the local Goodwill and kept some basic necessities in storage. I found the best deal in my city was actually through U Haul the moving truck company. They offer newer self storage service at many of their locations.

https://www.uhaul.com/Storage/

So for about $85 one gets a 10x10 indoor climate controlled room with security clearance badge and cameras. Pretty Good deal I think.

For an extra $10 a month I get a $5,000 insurance policy. I believe for $15 or more a month one can get a max. of about $10,000 insurance.

$5,000 is probably slightly low for the stuff being stored but it would probably be sufficient to cover some more basic stuff if the place ever burnt down.

As far as independent policies go, I am not familiar with them. Maybe not the answer you are looking for but hopefully informative.

Re: Insurance for items in storage in the US

Thanks for the replies so far. We actually already moved our stuff into storage and relocated in Zurich, so we don't have a lot of options. The storage company does offer a bit of insurance (up to $5k max, and for a huge markup) but we need more than this for adequate coverage. I imagine there are US or Swiss insurance companies that have some policy in place for this, but we haven't had luck finding anything yet.

It's a non standard risk, very difficult to obtain for a higher sum insured.
