Bicycle - liability insurance

I'm a cyclist. And moving to Zürich together with my bicycle.

Is it true that by law, you need to buy a liability insurance sticker for riding a bicycle on public roads?

Thanks in advance

No, they did away with those a few years ago.

The sticker has been done away with. BUT if, for example, a car stops in front of you, and because you're too close you crash into him, you're liable for any damage to the car. So it's good insurance to have regardless.

I found some bicycle insurance https://www.zurich.ch/en/private-cus...es-and-e-bikes
I hope the liability insurance is included.

Is this common in Switzerland? Do all cyclists have liability insurance?

Thanks a lot for clarification about the sticker!

Usually, people add it onto their House/Apartment insurance which is the cheapest way.

I think it is fairly common for it to be included in your household liability insurance.

Your household insurance should have public liability included, but check it covers you. If you're just moving and have a travel insurance for the time being, then that should also have liability coverage included. If you were to hit a pedestrian it could be very costly if you have no insurance.

Just another pointer, I don't know if you have children under 18 or still in education and under your control, but if they have an accident you will be liable. So check they are also on the insurance policy.

I have insurance through Smile Direct and the general liability covers this situation. I would recommend having liability (and also legal) insurance in Switzerland as the cost is minimal but the headache it can save you is enormous.

Household content insurance covers damages to your own stuff (due do fire, thefth, water, and some other events), but not damages to other people, and other people's stuff. It is optional, the risk is basically known and calculable. The worst case scenario which can happen is the all your possessions literally go up in flames.

Personal liability insurance covers damages to other people and their stuff. It has a coverage sum of some millions Francs. This normally also covers bike accidents. It costs around 100 CHF/year for a coverage of 3 to 5 millions. The risk is that you accidentally burn down a building, or cause bodily harm to some one causing loss of income, rehabilitation, and modification to the house due to disability.

Household content insurance and personal liability insurance can be taken out individually but are also offered as a combined package with reduced annual premiums. There might be further rebates if you have other insurances with the same company.

Some offers only cover one individual person, some cover all people from the same family living in the same household, and some cover all people living in the same household.
