Health Insurance - Recommendations

Hi all,

I have been here in Switzerland - Lausanne specifically - for nearly 3 months, and received a letter telling me i had to sort out health insurance before the 20th of February, or I risked being reported to some official agency.

I'm living and working full time for the foreseeable future, and wanted to know if anyone could recommend a good overall health plan that wasn't horrifyingly expensive, and didn't saddle me with big up front deductibles.

Another question; do dental services require a separate policy or is it possible to get dental cover included in the health insurance?

Many thanks

E.

Check on comparis.ch as prices vary by canton, it will show you the cheapest options. You can make it cheaper by using telmed (you have to phone before you see a doctor) or Hausartz (you always need to go via your gp) models.

But you need to get on it, or your Gemeinde will sign you up to one of their choice - usually expensive.

Go with the mandatory basic insurance. Standard model, franchise up to your financial capabilities and risk.

The deal is like this:
Each year, before the insurance pays anything you will have to pay healthcare cost up to the chosen franchise amount. After that you have a 10% copay up to CHF 700 of total copay per year.

Dental is not part of basic insurance. You will need extra coverage for that.

If you use your insurance, the price difference between a big deductible and a small one is minimal.

Premium with small deductible is larger, premium with large deductible is smaller, but add the deductible on to what premium you pay and you get to about the same amount.

If you don't use your insurance, you are best off with a large deductible as you will pay less over all.

It is all up to you to decide how healthy you are and what risk you want to take

Only the lowest of CHF 300 and highest of CHF 2500 deductibles are worth it. If you are young and never go to the doctor just get the highest and keep the money on the side in case of emergency. Also whatever happens you can always switch to a lower deductible.

Check on comparis for the cheapest offer. Basic insurances all offer the same coverage. Just watch out for the alternative insurance models, they are not bad per see but if you choose one you have to follow their conditions or you will have to pay a penalty.

Also remember that you can choose two different insurer for basic and supplementary insurance.
