It was in my case, 35 years ago.
35 years ago, health insurance was still optional. It only became obligatory in '97.

You really do want to read this before you bring other people in trouble:

... says the theoretical guy.

Interestingly enough, there is here nothing to support your statement. Like I said, if you insist you might be able to pay more.

Also make sure that you don't add accident insurance to this. That is covered by your employer since you're working more than 8 hours a week.
Yup, I was always reminded not to but accident insurance.

Art. 5 KVG https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi.../index.html#a5, Art. 7 and 8 KVV https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi.../index.html#a8
If signed up in good time (within three months) health insurance coverage starts with date of taking up residency. As the coverage starts with date of registration the health insurance can bill retrospectively.

If not signed up in good time coverage will start with the day health insurance is actually acquired. In addition to that a penalty in form of an increased insurance premium has to be paid.

Untruthful information will be fined with a monetary penalty of up to 180 day sentences Art. 92 KVG https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi...index.html#a92 As no fine is possible, this also means a criminal record entry.
