Re: new car insurance

You contact an agent from your favorite insurance. Get quotes and such to see how much it will cost and what coverage you want. You might do this with other insurances as well.

You go to the dealership buy the car.
Dealer calls insurance company and forwards the Stammnummer/Numéro matricule of the car to the insurance (kind of a "Swiss VIN").
Insurance forwards a proof of insurance (Versicherungsnachweis/Attestation d’assurance) to the StVA/SAN. This is done electronically and nearly instantaneous.
Now you or dealer, sorts out registration with StVA/SAN, get plates, and grey card.
Mount plates, takes keys and grey card, and drive off.
Some days later you sort out the paper work with your insurance.

Re: new car insurance

There's one thing I don't understand - I'm trying to register a car with which I moved to Switzerland. To get the Versicherungnachweis, I need to specify an expected start date and it is valid for up to 30 days. At the same time, when I submit documents to Strassenverkehrsamt, the Zurich's StVA informs me that I need Versicherungnachweis but I have no idea when can I expect a date for MfK test.

Re: new car insurance

I had a similar situation last year. I imported my car from the UK and organised all the relevant documentation. I got a good offer from Postfinance for the car insurance, having used Comparis first to check prices, cover levels etc. The offer of insurance from Postfinance lasted 30 days but by the time I got to the Strassenverkehrsamt it was after the 30 day period. The car passed the test and everything else was in order apart from the insurance offer which had elapsed. It was simple to dort, I called Postfinance who renewed the offer and sent the details electronically to the Strassenverkehrsamt. I then was able to complete everything and get plates. Can recommend Postfinance, good price and cover for my car, phone and online service in English which is a bonus too!

Thanks! By the way, which date did you provide to PostFinanz as the date of insurance begin - the day when you submitted documents?

Re: new car insurance

Starting day does not really matter, insurance starts automatically the moment the car gets plates

Re: new car insurance

If I remember correctly the date was the same day as I got the plates. I called Postfinance, within an hour they had sent electronically the record of insurance then I picked up the plates as the insurance was the only other document they needed, so it should all complete on the same day. I then called Postfinance just to confirm everything and give them my plate numbers

If you call the insurance for a Versicherungsnachweis, it is normally done nearly instantaneously and immediately visible for the MFK. In the worst case you must make a simple phone call to get a new Versicherungsnachweis at the time you pick-up the plates.

And what Mr. Don Molina said: Insurance only starts once you pick-up the plates/get the gray card.
