Travel Insurance Frustration (not Corona virus related!!!)

Hi!!

Please can anyone help - I am just finishing a 9 month work contract in Switzerland. I am then travelling back to the UK before taking a break in Croatia for a week and then back to Switzerland for a holiday before I get a job and settle down here properly. I have been looking at getting a 6 month travel insurance policy to cover the duration of my time 'between jobs' but -

to buy insurance from the UK I need to have been resident for 3 months (I'll have been in the UK for 12 days before I leave for Croatia and then back to Switzerland)

to buy insurance from Switzerland I need to be a permanent resident (I only have an L permit that expires on the 30/03/2020) - plus I am I right in that the travel insurance from here doesn't cover Medical because you'd already be covered with the mandatory ins from here?? (which I was going to cancel when I left for the UK)

Garrrrrggggghhhhh - my head hurts!!!! Please help!!!

I feel your pain ...

Do you have a UK EHIC- it is still valid until December for emergency cover in EU. Then you could also become a REGA member - but they would only repatriate you to Switzerland if required.

Travel insurance does not really cover much medical stuff even through they may say 10 million of cover, they return you to your place of residence & let your home countries arrangements pick up the tab.

Sounds like you need to keep up your Swiss medical insurance especially as you intend to return, your Swiss EHIC will cover you for 3 months as a tourist, however you need to pay the premiums.

World Nomads are pretty good. Check with them if it's ok that you have only just moved back to the UK. Don't mention you are planning on living in Switzerland again, as far as anyone is concerned, you are a UK resident, if something happens you are repatriated to the UK and treated by the NHS..... if you decide to move abroad again afterwards, what can they do?

Misleading an insurance company could lead to them not paying, it's also a criminal offence! The OP is NOT UK resident, he is Swiss resident with a Swiss residents card.

No he won't be. He ceases to be a Swiss resident when his job and residence permit expire. He will become a Swiss resident again when he returns to Switzerland in 6 months to work again and gets another residence permit. For the next 6 months, he will be a UK resident who is going travelling.

He ceased to be a UK resident when he got the Swiss permit, the full information MUST be given to the insurance company as insurance is based on 'utmost good faith'. Returning for a few days with no intention to live in the UK is very clear, so he will have no residence anywhere at this point, so won't be covered by the UK NHS.
