Re: Whats the car insurance claim sweet spot?

I hit my wing mirror on a barrier where they were doing road-works. The wing mirror is one of these all singing, all dancing things, which does just about everything except brewing coffee. It was completely smashed and replacement also cost around 1k CHF.
The thing to do is to claim on the insurance and they will calculate for you if it is worth paying up yourself or getting them to pay. It's no big deal, though obviously you don't want to do this too often.

Do you not have Bonus protection on your insurance?

Bonus protection covers you for the running contract. When you get the next car, you'll need to mention that you've had a claim, and then you get the hit.

Generally companies ask for claims in the last 5 years, so if you change cars in that kind of frequency, you will definitely pay more for your insurance, or you will have to shop around a lot.

Re: Whats the car insurance claim sweet spot?

I would get the mirror done properly (even more so if the car is leased)
Really, CHF1,000 doesn't sound that unreasonable to me. While you are at it, get the dent sorted under your parking insurance. You have a certain number of parking damages per year, which expire and then the new ones come into force. If you don't use them then you lose them, so might as well.

If it's one of these hi-tech wing mirrors which does everything bar brewing coffee, it can easily get to 1k CHF.
As for the insurance, you can always register the claim with them. They will calculate whether you're going to be better off carrying the cost yourself or having the insurance pay out.
