FYI - in Switzerland, married couples file together. Not sure how that works if you file separately in Greece and you need to use tax treaties between the countries to your advantage.
Does this also apply if the wife lives abroad? I mean, if the wife is working in another country and taxed there, does the husband have to declare her income here and get taxed here as well?

Separate taxation was something that was introduced in Greece a few years ago, specifically for this reason. Husband works abroad, wife works in Greece, most of the times as a temporary situation. Husband cannot prove that his tax residency is not in Greece as the law is very vague and up to interpretation: the tax residency lies where the centre of your life is (or a wording similar to this). If your wife and kids live in Greece, your family (= the centre of your life) is there and therefore you are considered a Greek tax resident. You have to declare your Swiss income in Greece and be taxed in Greece as well. In the past it was even more strict. No matter how many rental agreements, kreisburo statements or employer statements I gave them, they would still consider me a Greek tax resident (and I was single!!!). They fixed that with separate tax returns. Wife stays with the local tax office, husband moves to the special tax office for Greeks abroad and they file separate tax returns.

Now for the swiss tax office, I have to admit I had never thought of that, it is actually the reverse situation.

That I don't know, but I'm sure we have members in this kind of situation (spouses residing in two different countries) who can explain how they handle it.

I was under the impression that OP and his wife would be residents here, thus they'd file a joint return here.

Having double insurance is indeed possible.

Just be careful that for supplementary insurance (if want to go to a private hospital) you need to register 1+ year beforehand in Switzerland, though standard one is pretty good as compared to many places worldwide.

tax: If you have a B permit and earn < 150k you do not have to file anything. Otherwise you have to file your worldwide income to my knowledge, and you most likely would be paying tax for your wife only if the tax rate in Switzerland is higher than in Greece (I guess quite unlikely). But you can call up the tax office (or ask someone who is proficient in the local language to call). They are usually quite helpful.

Agreed, but I mentioned earlier that the OP doesn't seem to care about his wife being covered by Greek health insurance (she will give birth here, paid for by Swiss health insurance): he cares about his wife still being able to claim maternity benefits in Greece, which is apparently linked to the Greek health insurance scheme.

I think the thread title should be "Can one immigrate to Switzerland and give birth to a child (paid for by Swiss health insurance), but subsequently obtain maternity benefits in Greece by still being registered in the Greek health insurance program?"

That's how I read things...

Re: Simultaneous [health] insurance in two countries - is that possible?

Hi, thank you all for the advice/insights. I now know that being insured in both places is totally possible, so I am just gonna leave it here for future reference. I will get back to describe the entire process after we actually do it. Thanks again!
