Personal liability (RC) and ECA insurance

Hi Everyone,

I have another newbie question, regarding the personal liability and ECA insurance.

When filling out application forms for renting an apartment they ask for the name of RC insurer which implies I should already have it.

I browsed through previous threads and I understand that ECA is not the same as the RC insurance, but when looking on companies websites for RC insurance (e.g. https://www.vaudoise.ch/fr/particuli...abilite-civile) the form for premium calculation looks the same as ECA.

I want to make sure I don't accidentally get the same one twice and that it's actually different. (sorry if it's a trivial question)

Also, since I don't have an apartment yet, should I get insurance for the temporary sublet address I currently live in and update it when I move?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Personal liability (RC) and ECA insurance

The ECA is a state run insurance scheme which covers natural disasters (primarily fire and flooding). If you're renting a property, it will be applicable to the goods in the property. In the canton of Vaud it's a state run monopoly, but is relatively cheap. Any household insurance policy you take out will have the premium reduced to exclude the part covered by the ECA.
The RC is third party insurance and covers damage caused by you, not only to the flat you're renting, but anything else you may end up coming into contact with. As someone renting a property, the owner may require you to have an appropriate policy to cover any damage you may cause.
Many insurance companies will offer you a combined household / RC policy.
