Health insurance - when does it start?

Hi!

Do you start paying health insurance from the day you start being registered or from 1st day of the month?

We need to register back from 30th of July and I am wondering whether they will charge a whole month or just prorate to 2 days?

Thank you

K

Re: Health insurance - when does it start?

Usually it's the whole month so if you can put off registering for a few days and do it in August that would be better. May depend on the company though; I think I've read here that some do it from the day of registration.

Kri, did you mean "back from 30th of June", instead of July? We are still in July.

I am not sure OP can just "put off registering" if they moved to Switzerland. As far as I remember, you must obtain a health insurance that retroactively covers you from the first day that you moved to Switzerland, isn't it?

Re: Health insurance - when does it start?

The medical insurance starts theoretically from the moment of registration. In Switzerland having medical insurance is mandatory.
Most health insurance providers prefer to cover full months, so you will pay as of the 1st of the next month you registered with the gemeinde. In your case as of July 1 if you registered on June 30.

They changed that a few years ago now so you are only liable for insurance from the date you register and they will charge you pro rata for the first month.
They may try to charge you from the first day of the month but you can challenge them.
Same when you leave.

Re: Health insurance - when does it start?

From the day you registered your residency. You will only have to pay the days of the month you have been a Swiss resident. (Also applies when you move abroad, or get born, or you die).
