Health insurance cost for family of 3

Hello everyone,

Landed recently in Switzerland, and have been following this forum for a while, so thank you all for the great community and valuable information provided.

I have a general question on Health Insurance costs to validate if i am on the right track.

Have been dealing with a broker and i am finally making my decision to most likely go with SWICA (Sante24/Telmed model with general Ward for me and my partner and Private ward for our toddler, plus some supplemental coverage)

Overall the total monthly premium works out around 800 CHF/month and wanted to see if we are in the ball park regarding cost for a balanced coverage for a family of 3.

Any feedback/comments would be really appreciated. Many thanks

Re: Health insurance cost for family of 3

What is/are your "franchise"s? What age are you/your family? Do you have any existing long-term conditions to take into account?

Sounds OK-ish for a family of 3, but you probably have a very high franchise.

You know you can look up insurance costs for all insurances online, right?

Re: Health insurance cost for family of 3

Apologies, forgot to add that as well

Yes, 2500 franchise for both adults, 0 for the baby.

Adults age mid-late 30s, baby under 2

No existing long term conditions

Yes, well I know Comparis.ch, and i know each family will be different, was just looking for a sensitivity check from other families that we are around the expected cost.

I think SWICA is not the cheapest, but looking to have some balance between service/coverage and flexibility since it is our first time doing this and did not want to commit to long contracts (3-5 years) that other companies seem to request for Supplemental coverage, if that makes sense.

Thank you

For the basic "compulsory" insurance, "the family" doesn't really matter, all that matters is the age, sex and postcode and franchise and insurance model of an individual. As far as I know there are no "family" deals for the basic insurance

You may get an offer on the "supplementary" part by taking the lot as a family - but it sounds like you are only getting this for the child. "General ward" is what the basic insurance offers (actually, there is no such term AFAIK)

800 is in the ballpark, for 2500 franchise the basic insurance for a 30-year is around 250-270/month, and the child insurance at 0 franchise about 80-100/month. You are paying 100-150 extra for the "supplementary" part - up to you to decide if this is worth for you...

Re: Health insurance cost for family of 3

I would say you're in the high ballpark..

For my family of 4, two adult @2.5k and two kids at zero franchise plus the supplemental like semi private etc.. We're around 800.

Good to get the supplementary now, in case it's not available later. If you want it.

We are in the same boat, family of 3 (baby <1 year old). Paying ~750 with 2500/0 deductible but including supplemental for the baby (good to get it now because the chance of refusal is very low yet).

800 sounds about right, with all the extras for the baby and 0 deductible

Re: Health insurance cost for family of 3

Well, similar situation here... I'm in Switzerland since 3y and currently with Assura. However we recently decided to move fully to CH with my wife as we're expecting baby in December this year.

I got an offer from Assura for (PharMed model):
- baby, 0 Fr franchise - 72,55 CHF / month
- wife, 2500 franchise - 208,55 CHF / month
- myself, 2500 franchise - 200,00 CHF / month
total: 481,1 CHF

There is also a question if the model we have right now is fine for family. So far (3y) I've never had a need to go to doctor nor need their help.

3rd item is that we would like to give a birth in Switzerland and hence how to get proper insurance for this since there is no premiums avalible for us being mid of pregnancy already...

Any suggestions highly welcome.

I don't understand. Your wife has been offered insurance (in fact she cannot be refused) so pregnancy and birth is covered. You might not get supplementary coverage, but the standard insurance covers everything she needs.

Age over 25 is irrelevant as it does not change the premium, young adults subsidise the older although over peoples lifetime it would average out.

Pregnancy is covered, even if you give birth the day you arrive in Switzerland it's included at zero extra cost.

Re: Health insurance cost for family of 3

Thanks everyone, it is reassuring we are not doing this completely wrong, however nothing signed yet so still considering more carefully the supplemental piece to drop what might not provide real value and just include what might become useful when baby is older in case we stay around long.

Hope to be able to help the community here in the future from our own experience!

Re: Health insurance cost for family of 3

FYI - You do not need to use a broker if you don't want to. IMO it's just additional cost. You can find everything you need to know online and make a decision from there.

Be aware that you will have to pay the premiums backdated from the day you first registered...

Oh, sorry as I was not clear enough. We’re hoping for a private room during giving a birth but this is covered under premium insurance. Usually it requires to be paid few months before you can use it.

I believe we should be still good with basic insurance.

But then comparing 800CHF (SWICA) vs. 500CHF (ASSURA) and the same conditions like franschise and support model, the price is quite high I would say. What else could SWICA do better to make us decide to go for more expensive insurance?

Re: Health insurance cost for family of 3

You can pay out of your own pocket for a private room. However, that’s for after the baby is born. During the actual labour, when she is having the baby, she will have a private labour room even on basic insurance.

Re: Health insurance cost for family of 3

Beware of the restriction imposed on the PharMed model mainly:

1) You need to go first to chosen family doctor for health issues except gynäkologie, emergency etc. Ofcourse family doctor will refer you to specialist if required but first you need to consult family doctor.

2) You can buy medicine only from pharmacies selected by Assura

If you are willing to satisfy both of these condition, only then go for Pharmed model. At least for baby I would choose Basis model which allows free choice of doctors.

Remember for non-working persons, accident insurance is also need to be taken along health insurance.
