Car Insurance

Hey there,

I am writing to inquire about car insurance. . A friend of mine is leaving switzerland immediately and I have agreed to buy his car from him. However, I don't plan to keep the car and would like to sell it as soon as possible.

I will not be driving the car. With this in mind, is the insurance requirement still mandatory. It is true that insurance companies tend to refund the amount for the unused period but there is always deductibles and ideally I would like to avoid them, if possible.

Is there a simplified process in this instance?

Cheers

Re: Car Insurance

Hopefully this is a very good friend and will remain so after the car has gone.

You have put yourself in a potentially difficult situation. We have no idea of the value of the vehicle, but if it on private land it needs neither plates nor insurance.

However, you will not be bale to give potential buyers a test drive. Also if the car is damaged, stolen, vandalised etc. You are uninsured.

If you do get insurance, you can cancel on the sale of the car, but don‘t expect insurance companies to do this without covering their costs - and then some...

Re: Car Insurance

Do you already own a car? If yes, I think the wechselschild is the best option for you.

Thank you for the comment. Actually, he is a good friend . We did go through the fair valuation by visiting a garage and checking the average price online.

You have paid far too much probably by 1/3, advertised prices are not sale prices & your friend was a forced seller.

Insurance premium will be based on the "more expensive" of the two.

Are you trying to tell us that you can get a car for 2/3 of advertised price? I’ve been looking for a car for some time and the best discount I got was about 1k CHF for a car of advertised value about 22k CHF.

If you have a good friend then you don’t want to rob your friend but rather help and not make double on him...

Not quite. Premiums more or less add up, especially the teilkasko where there is no discount on expected liability (both cars could be stolen, parked while damaged, weather damaged, etc)

It is cheaper than having two separate policies, but it's not as amazing as one would expect. Road tax effective discount is much more visible, especially if they're both expensive and one disappears almost completely (minus whatever fee the STVA will charge depending on the canton).

I've had motorcycles for only a couple of months, insurance had no qualm on charging me insured days only. I don't think there is a minimum duration you have to pay - if you sell the car or deposit plates, insurance and road tax just goes away.

In practice it's more than either of them woudl be on its own, but still somewhat less than insuring them separately.

The problem you may come up against is that you find yourself unable to sell the car for what you paid for it, in which case you'll be liable for the loss while your friend laughs all the way to the bank.

The difference isn't so much about advertised vs. actual prices, but that many of the adverts are from garages, so come with guarantees etc. Selling a car privately you would certainly expect to be looking at a significantly lower price.

Honestly, in your position I can't see why you would do it like this - if he's such a good friend why don't you just sell it for him and pass on the proceeds afterwards, rather than exposing yourself to the risk of losing money?

Exactly this.
OP, try to unwind yourself from this position. Get your friend to either engage a forecourt to sell it for him for a %/fixed fee, or just bite the bullet and sell to a dealer and get what they can for it.
