Supplementary insurance with a **simple** application?

Hi everyone.

I moved to Zurich at the end of last year and currently have Sanitas basic insurance with free choice of doctors. I want to add on some supplementary and private hospital insurance.

I tried making an application for Sanitas supplementary insurance (which is nice and comprehensive), but the application form requires quite detailed information. It has to include all medical appointments, diagnoses etc. from the past five years, with dates. The only exception is appointments for colds and flu, which don't have to be reported.

I understand that insurance companies want to weed out the unhealthy/expensive people and therefore they will all conduct some kind of assessment. However I simply don't have records of the dates of every medical appointment I have had since 2015. I haven't had any major treatments or overnight hospital stays, but I have had quite a few outpatient appointments for small things like allergies, headaches etc. (which would be covered by basic insurance anyway), some of which were in other countries.

Can anyone recommend a supplementary/hospital insurance provider with a simpler assessment? Such as just asking for hospital stays or serious conditions. I don't want to end up paying for a load of insurance, only to find out it's not valid because I forgot to mention that I had antibiotics for a throat infection 4 years ago.

Re: Supplementary insurance with a **simple** application?

My insurance (Groupe Mutuel) asked for some documentation, which I didn't agree with (for context: they wanted me to get a Swiss doctor to comment on a surgery that was done in CA, USA 10 years ago), so I called them up and described why I thought this was impractical, and offered another way (my GP records for the past 3 years from the USA). They agreed to this without any drama, and then I got the insurance. It may be worth it to call them and ask what it is exactly they're looking for, and whether another method is available (for example, an extensive physical check up by your GP or you getting the records from your past medical provider and sending them onwards instead of filling out a form). Fwiw, it should not be difficult to get your medical records from your past providers (just call and ask -- you may need to send/fax some forms to get copies), and I would recommend you have a copy of these anyway for yourself just in case. The goal of their ask is obvious to both parties, and I think as long as you are willing to meet that goal, they may be flexible with how you do it. My advice would be first to talk to them and see if you can sort it out to satisfy both you and them (after all, they want your business!).

Otherwise, I'm not super impressed with GM's supplementary offerings, but this really depends on what you need/want! I think their costs are good (for my zip code) and they have treated me well (knock on wood) and generally, my medical needs are satisfied. I really wish I had better dental and eye coverage, but I didn't see anything on the market for a comparable price.
