| | Making Sense of my Car Insurance Bill
Hi,
I received today the annual insurance bill of my car, a 7 years old vehicle. I decided to ask some questions here, which I hope doesn't annoy anyone.
It's ~1500 CHF, composed of three major parts: - Third party liability: I know this is the mandatory part and covers the damagers to the other party's vehicle. So all good here.
- Partial Casco: I know (or not?) that for cars older than 4 years the full Casco is not possible, and partials Casco is for covering theft, natural damages, and similar stuff to my own car.
- Accidental damage (Comprehensive Cover): What is this then? Parking damage (only)? Anything for which the other party is unknown?
I really appreciate some help and possible feedbacks. The insurer is Zurich.
Many thanks
Best

Partial Casco + Accidental = Full Casco it seems.

Is it true that the full Casco for 5+ years old cars is more or less useless because the insurer reduces the value by 20% for each year of the car's age?

I had a Peugeot 306 with 180,000 km that a third party damaged, they offered 4650 fo a car I would have happily sold for 1500 pre accident. I kept the car for 500 & sold it to the garage that estimated the repair for 1000. Second hand doors & the car could have been repaired for 1000

So you don't completely rule out taking collision damage for older cars, correct?

Mine was only insured for 3rd party, I claimed from the lorry driver that backed into my car. They negotiated over the phone, very simple process unlike say the UK.

Best | | | | | I think you're over insured and pay too much.l my Audi is nearly 10 years old. I have only partial casco and 3rd party liability, and pay approximately 500 CHF per year

Those two only for me mean ~1000 CHF, and my bill has remained unchanged since I bought the car two years ago.

Tom | | | | | What is that? I have "bonus protection" but no mention of a percentage in their letter.

Last year I called the insurance and they said the bonus will be applied "after three years".

AFAIK the premium for Vollkasko is always a percentage of the new value regardless of the car's age. By default, maximum payout is its current value, however some insurance companies have special conditions, including Zurich.
Zurich say on page 11 in their T&C (in German) that they pay 100% until the end of the car's fifth year, and only its market value afterwards. At this point the maximum you'd get is ~40% of its new value. While this sounds nice, it also means you're overpaying during the first year or two because the higher-than-justified payout during the later years must be financed somehow.
Long story cut short: you're paying far too much, time to give them a call. If you expect to use used parts in case of a damage you may want to think about cancelling the Kasko part altogether.
Besides, your bonus protection has nothing to do with how high it is, it's part of the Vollkasko, as depicted at the start of their T&C.

Tom | | | | | Sure, AFAIK the bonus for the Kasko and 3dr party liability may differ anyway, subject to the insurance they may be two differnt things. I'm considering canceling mine as well, I no longer make many km.

1,500 for a 7 year old car seems a lot. Admittedly I don't know what the car is, how old you are etc. But 1,500 seems obscene. Are others here paying similar?
