Is medical insurance really neccessary

I do not plan to ever visit the doctor and have a UK bupa policy - Also I travel back every few weeks and will probably work from the UK in Jan for a few months

Is there any way to self insure or buy a policy from abroad to satisfy the authorities?

My premium at the moment is 2400 which is something and if it can be avoided would love to know

Re: Is medical insurance really neccessary

Did you read this: health-insurance-look-here-before-asking-questions-please ?

There are plenty of other threads already about this, but fundamentally you don't have a choice. Health insurance from one of the approved Swiss insurers is mandatory and your commune will need proof that you have a proper Swiss policy.

And no, BUPA is not sufficient.

(See other threads for some odd minor exceptions to the rule).

No, it's a requirement for all Swiss residents to have a Swiss policy. I tried to have a BUPA international policy accepted however items such as 'child birth' are not covered, being male I did not think this was an issue, however ZH authorities did, amusingly URDORF had accepted it. This was at the start of compulsory insurance & I managed to stretch this out over 18 months before getting Swiss insurance. You won't be so lucky as that option no longer exists.

I assume that's for a year so it's pretty low.

And as others have said, no you can't avoid it. It's mandatory for everyone who's resident here.

Yes I did the difference is that I will not be in Zurich for 3 to 6 months because of covid and I am sure others also are looking to bring down their costs

The only way to avoid paying health insurance premiums during that time would be to deregister and re-register when you come back or to try to put your permit on hold during that time.

Not their problem. If you choose to declare your absence, which you can do on a C permit for up to nine months, IIRC, then you can put it on hold for that period, but that's only possible if you do not return to CH within that time. I don't think it's possible on a B, G or L permit.

EDIT: I see I was beaten to it, but meh!

If I was British I wouldn’t deregister. Things might be clearer in the coming months, but ...

The risk is he may not be able to reactivate it if his medical status changes. I kept mine going for the 20 years I was in CH

Re: Is medical insurance really neccessary

You could take the highest franchise, lowest cost Swiss insurance and then hope BUPA cover you if you actually need anything significant.

Or maybe you can reduce your BUPA cover without risking your status, many policies allow you to make a certain amount of change at certain times without requiring checks etc.

He probably will have as big Excess with BUPA, mine was Ł2000, he is earning buckets of money so don't see the issue.
