Understanding health insurance exemption for those who pay compulsory insurance in US
Hi Everyone!
I sorry to bother you all with this question, but I have been digging through forums and the government websites and have become progressively more confused.
I am an American who just married a Swiss person resident in Zurich. I just got a B permit (today) to stay here, but I am actually a full time PhD student in the US who is just working remotely due to the pandemic. As I am in the University of California system, I have to pay for compulsory health insurance with global coverage that is fairly comprehensive. (*NOTE I am not technically studying in Switzerland at any institution so I do not think I am not eligible for that exemption to insurance for foreign students.)
If I understand correctly, non-EU/EFTA people who are residence permit (B in my case) holders who have compulsory health insurance in their home country can apply to be exempted from KVG insurance if the authorities determine that it is equivalent or better than the minimum KVG, correct?
And again, if I understand all this correctly, I must apply to the cantonal authorities with a signed document (insurance form D) from my insurer that they cover everything that KVG covers. Correct?
If anyone has any experience with this or if I am incorrect in my understanding, please let me know.
Best,
Jay
