Advice on ending supplementary insurance contract

Hello all,

We are a family, 2 adults and a baby.

Currently we are insured with Visana but want to change to Helsana.

We have:
Me

Basic insurance Visana until 31.12.20 > Helsana from 1.1.21
Supplementary insruance - Helsana

My wife

Basic insurance Visana until 31.12.20 > Helsana from 1.1.21
Supplementary insruance - Visana with a multiple year contract

Child
Basic insurance Helsana
Supplementary insruance - Helsana

Helsana seem great, but our sales rep is a bit hit and miss. He found some loopholes to get out of the complementary supplementary insurance me and my wife had with Visana last year (2019). We had a misunderstanding about the basic insurance which meant the contract wasn't ended and we stayed with Visana for 2020.

For me, there was a clause about price rises, this worked and Im now with Helsana since 1.1.20 for supplementary. For my wife, there was a clause about her being less than 30 which didn't work somehow and she stayed with Visana but with the promise that our Helsana rep would take care of it.

Now we have all insurance moved to Helsana from 1.1.2021, only my wife's supplementary insurance is orphaned with Visana. The Helsana rep wrote to us saying he talked with Visana and is very surprised they insist on keeping my wifes contract, that it is very unusual. He suggested we write a strongly worded email to Visana asking they be flexible.

I never fully understood the loopholes that were used and put trust in the rep, which I know isn't great but its been an intense year or two. Could anyone advise of any options we have beyond emailing? Like complaining to Visana management or maybe even tweeting @Visana? Is it really that unreasonable for Visana to hold on to this contract?

Any assistance would be great - I will happily write a grumpy email to Visana but if there are any other options I would like to know about them as it seems like an outside shot

Thank you

Supplementary insurance can be very difficult to get again. Especially if you have any preexisting medical issues

Thanks but my wife has no existing issues and we have everything agreed with Helsana to take her on, it is only the question of how we settle things with Visana

What does your contract say? Usually you have to ssend the cancellation for a supplement insurance three months before the end of the year. So depending on when your broker acted you might have missed that one. Then no, I don't think there is anything that can be done. Just make sure you cancel now for the end of 2021 and also make sure have a written agreement from the new insurar that they will take on your wife (and for what price). Don't rely on a broker ;-)

Re: Advice on ending supplementary insurance contract

Ok thanks for the reply. To be clear, the person handling us is an employee of Helsana, not a broker.. but your advice not to trust a third party is of course the right one.

I've had a chat with his team colleague and they have another option, so will have to rely on them.. I wouldnt have known how to get out of a multiple year contract before the end in any case, so will just have to rely on them a bit more and hope it comes through
