Health insurance for cross-border phd student

Hello!

I am a phd student in Geneva, commuting from France. As a phd student, I have both a student status at the university and a work contract. I am looking into the health insurance options, and I am quite confused.

What I understand:

1. Cross-border workers can choose between the swiss and the french system.
2. Students in Switzerland can have an exemption from the swiss insurance system and use a service that provides "equivalent coverage" (https://www.ge.ch/document/7735/annexe/0). These alternative services seem to be significantly cheaper (Swisscare, Scorestudies, etc)

What I don't understand:

1.I have read at some places that Phd students might not be able to take this exemption, as some Cantons have a salary limit, above which they don't approve the exemption request. Does anyone know what this limit for Geneva is?
2. When looking at the exemption request form I linked, I see that I have the option to choose from B, C and L permits, but the G permit is not on the list (which is what cross-border workers have). Can it be that cross-border students do not have the option to use the cheaper student insurance?

Does anyone have any relevant experience/knowledge?

Many thanks!!!

Re: Health insurance for cross-border phd student

I phoned swisscare and they said as I had a G permit they couldn't insure me. For what its worth it took me 2 days to get through to them so not sure you are missing out if they won't insure you...

Great information here

https://ethz.ch/content/dam/ethz/ass...canton_ZH1.pdf

Important note: In principle, postdocs (except postdocs with scholarship), researchers, lecturers, academic guests and visiting professors cannot be exempted from the mandatory health insurance

because you are salaried and earn as much or more as many other workers.

The OP isn't a postdoc though - but a postgrad

Re: Health insurance for cross-border phd student

That is meant for students living in Switzerland. With a G permit you are a cross-border worker, a cross-border student does not need a permit.
In any case you can call the cantonal office (you can find the number online) and confirm.
If you plan to work in CH long-term the swiss insurance may be better as I heard the french one becomes very expensive once you start making good money.
