What is not clear to me is if we can choose the pediatrician before choosing the health insurance (provider and model) or do we need to make sure the pediatrician we pick is "recognized" by the health insurance?
It would depend on the model. With the standard model you have free choice of doctor. There is not much to be saved when a child uses a different then the standard model (One insurance I check it is CHF 122 for the standard model, CH109 with the GP model). Even supplementary insurance is "cheap" (compared to adults), and offered with no questions asked for unborns (contract has to be made before birth).

Everyone I know just goes to their GP. Maybe the OP should ask their GP for their advice.
Probably most people in the western world do, including Switzerland. In the countryside, small villages or towns etc the only option is the local doctor.

Re: Health insurance and pediatrician

As said above, I live in the sticks- but we have a fabulous array of specialists- and SOME GPs just down the road, who choose to have a much wider professional experience, reflecting their previous professional training.

When we had our initial meeting, just to get to know each other- we discussed this at length. And it was so refreshing for my OH to see that she has a very similar attitude to General Practice, and would hate to have a very narrow professional experience, with no pediatrics, no gynea, no .... nothing but colds- with all patients just going straight to specialists, and wihtout the family/global/ holistic view of a patient- just unlinked bits and pieces. The reason he chose to become a GP in the end, many moons ago, the variety and holistic approach.

Re: Health insurance and pediatrician

Thanks everyone for your useful answers!
I think I will try to find a pediatrician as soon as possible (please let me know if you have suggestion in Seefeld area) and I will subscribe standard health insurance for the kid (so that there is no restriction on the doctor).

Thanks again!

A little higher up the hill than Seefeld, Kinderarztpraxis Römerhof is excellent.
