European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Hi,
New to Switzerland and sorting out my Health Insurance. I have heard that my UK issued EHIC is a valid exemption from the health insurance requirement, even post EU. Does anyone know if the is the case? Thanks

No it isn’t.
If you are retired and don’t have a Swiss pension you may be eligible for an exemption due to the agreement with the UK but a EHIC alone isn’t going to cut it.

Here the information from the respective governments in which cases you are exempt from the compulsory Swiss health insurance:

Re: European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

100% not the case. As BelgianMum says, if you are retired on UK pension and of UK State penionable age, without any Swiss income or pension- you may qualify for exemption via form S1 (but I think you had to be registered by end of Dec 2020). However if exempt via Form S1- you will face other major issues- as you won't be covered anywhere else than CH and UK- with no Swiss Travel Insurance product available (as in our case).

No it is not - sadly this is wrong on many levels.

1) Your UK issued EHIC is not valid anywhere as you aren't a UK resident anymore.

2) Even if you were a UK resident, UK EHIC's aren't valid in Switzerland anymore (but are still valid in Europe)

3) EHIC's are for cover while in a country you aren't resident in. Thus, a French person holding a French EHIC and moving to Switzerland wouldn't be covered.

Pay up basically! Your Swiss basic insurance will come with a Swiss EHIC, and you can bin your UK issued EHIC.

Surely you would be entitled to a UK EHIC or whatever it's now called.

No because you wouldn't be a UK resident.

But she gets her Swiss health insurance covered by the UK. Other KP pensioners living in the UK had a UK EHIC when drawing a UK pension, rather than a local one.
When I claim Swiss Pillar 1, I will have Swiss health insurance & a Swiss EHIC although not a Swiss resident

Swiss residents who have Swiss compulsory Insurance are automatically covered up to twice the estimated Swiss cost, anywhere in the world. They can then take Travel Insurance that will cover any necessary top-ups and repatriation. We have Swiss travel insurance, that would cover repatriation, but not medical costs.

Any yes, we also have UK EHIC, which covers for emergency care only, and only in EU, and only to some extent. For isntance, in France, 70% would be covered. It's complicated. To have S1 exemption you must be of UK pensionable age (65+) and have no Swiss pension or income whatsoever.

which is why you can get top up travel insurance to pick up the excess- if you have Swiss Insurance. We of course cannot even envisage doing any trips to US, or as previously planned, once our dog is no longer with us- our long planned trip to OZ, Tasmania and NZ, as we can't get cover, at all.

At least in EU we will have basic EHIC for part cover, Travel Insurance for repatriation asap in case of problem, and REGA. Not perfect and a bit stressful- but better than nought. Outside Europe now just not possible for us. Only option would be to have full Swiss Insurance, + top up- only as holiday insurance- which is just too expensive.

Trying currently to find a broker to cover top up excess, but due to age (both over 70 very soon) and pre-exisiting conditions- almost impossible. Will just have to cut cloth accordingly. Do get in touch by pm Sussex, if you need more information.

Re: European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Also don't forget that EHIC is essentially emergency health insurance, covering your for urgent medical treatment whilst travelling. It won't cover you for on-going conditions, check-ups etc.
