Car Insurance - Vehicle Usage - Commuting

Generally for car insurance quotes they ask what is you mainly use for the car (for example):

One or more can be selected. Listing commuting and business increases the cost of the quote as I guess most of us would expect.

Our family generally won't be using the car to commute with (we cycle or go by train normally), But I wouldn't want to get caught out if we use it once in while to travel to work (i.e. a claim to be dismissed as the car is being used at a commuting / peak time).

How does this work in reality with car insurance providers? Do people have a practical experience with car insurance in relation to this?

Never been asked whilst claiming if it was a private or commute trip. In general I don't think the insurance companies spend much effort checking these details, though it is probably worthwhile keeping your expected mileage reasonably accurate
