Health insurance

Hi all,

I signed up for Helsana Basic Insurance and Additional insurance Completa for my son before his birth. However, semi private and Prevea could only be signed up after the birth.

I just gave birth last month and everything is fine (both healthy) with me and my son. I submited the application with questionnaires for semi private insurance 2 weeks ago to start the coverage on 01 Nov 2021. One of the questions is if my son has any plan to go for physiotherapy or osteopathy treatment which he has no plan at the time of application.

My son was at the pediatrician yesterday and the doctor suggested to have a checkup with Osteopath expert for my son to improve our breastfeeding situation.

I am a bit concerned if it is fine to have the Osteopathie treatment before 01 Nov.
Osteopathie treatment is already in his current Completa insurance policy but my concern is if Helsana will reject his application for semi private if they found out that my son goes for Osteopathy treatment before 01 Nov.

Appreciate your thoughts. Thank you!

Re: Health insurance

Congratulations!

Assuming that this question is about whether you will receive the supplementary insurance coverage:

If the child is to receive semi-private or private insurance that allows a free choice of doctor and a hospital stay in a double or single room, it is advisable to take out health insurance before birth. This is because if a child's health is impaired due to complications at birth, for example, the health insurance company can make reservations or even refuse insurance altogether if the application is only made after the fact.

A rejection is also possible on the basis of prenatal examinations. If such information is available, parents are required by law to disclose it to the health insurance company before signing up for insurance. The health insurance company requests this information with a health questionnaire for supplemental insurance policies. However, the health insurance company is not allowed to demand such examinations - so parents only have to declare what they already know.

In your case (but I am by no means any form of expert) you really need to clarify this with Helsana.

In any case, if your child is not covered yet then I truly wouldn’t worry about it - private insurance for babies / children is really not needed in Switzerland in most cases (in-fact from my own experience 27 years ago - most pediatricians would advise against it). I’m not even sure that there is a private section for kids at the Zurich Kinderspital for example. The care will be excellent, and your baby won’t notice the difference whether they can have champagne in their room or not .

Osteopathy has its uses but it isn't a medical science and it isn't proven beneficial. Cranial osteopathy, which is often linked with breastfeeding is pure quackery.

My advice - don't do the treatment. Enjoy your child. Find a lactation consultant. Don't worry - for one of our kids, my wife couldn't breastfeed. The child did fine.
