Size or capacity?

I've been in this fair land for nearly ten years and have been driving all that time. I was married to a Swiss girl but she moved on and left me with our two sons and our car. That was five years ago.

My ex used to sort all the bills etc and I just took them to the Post Office and paid them.

Silly really as I could probably save money on lots of my outgoings by shopping around. Being a single dad I really don't have time to go about organising this and I really don't understand Technical insurance type language especially in German.

My question (at last) revolves around car insurance. I'm told that in some kantons you pay according to engine size and in others it's the Weight / size of the car that counts. Does this mean that someone in a "size" kanton would pay more insurance for a heavy car than for a light Porsche sports car? Conversely, would a driver in the other type of Kanton pay more for a 3.0 Litre Range Rover than for a 1.8 Hyundai Coupé?

I'm hoping to change my car soon and am hoping for something a little more "sporty" looking

I'm in kanton Solothurn.

Re: Size or capacity?

In Solothurn the road tax is determined by the size of your engine (ccm)

There's a calculator (The first one, sorry in german, but I'm sure you'll figure it out)

Hi, Flashman4! How do you do? Trying to answer your question I must say is not size or capacity only. There ist far more to be taken for calculate the premium. Programms of insurance companies are multiplicating items as follow: drive experiences (how long you have driving license?), nationality, kind of permit, if you had acc. in the last 5 years..., whether you are a man or woman..., how relate weight of a car to his enginee power..., which kind of brake a car has..., how many acc. in the few last years has a particulary model of a specific car..., which nationalities and if youngsters are driving that model of a specific car...if a car is produced in Europa or not... is that car an german or italian made vehicule... ... ....so you see it's far more things needing to calculate the premium.

Have a nice day

Actaully Lob I think you're right. I was confusing tax with insurance.

I really should start to pay attention to all this paperwork stuff instead of just paying automatically every month. Trouble is when I sit down with anything remotely concerned with Legalese, my eyes glaze over and I have to go have a beer.
