Are you insured for trekking? (Check the small print!) Ayup.

I am planning a trekking holiday around Zermatt area and have a travel policy through my Bank.

The policy includes cover for winter sports, mountain biking etc. but I noticed a potential problem:

I am not insured for trekking unless I stick to designated paths and do not use any specialist equipment. More reasonably, mountaineering with ropes or a guide is not covered. My question to my insurer was: Are trekking poles or crampons classified as specialist equipment? Their initial response was yes, and that I would not be insured.

This could mean that if I walk up a snow covered path on my own, with no safety equipment, and ski or cycle back down, I am insured, but if I take part in an organised trek with a guide and safety equipment, I am not insured.

I had to get this referred to their claims department before they could see the stupidity of their policy and I now have cover.

I would strongly recommend that you check any accident policies etc. to ensure that their are no loopholes to catch you out.
