basic sickness insurance policy when unemployed

Dear EFs,

Maybe someone can help me with an insurance query....

I remember that 3 years ago when i became unemployed I had to change my sickness insurance policy (both basic and supplementary). Cannot remember well what i idid, but have a vague memory that it was just moving it from collective policy to individual policy, and that the reason for this was to avoid getting restrictions. This was in Canton St Gallen

I am unemployed again (sigh...), and just called my insurer to make the make the same change, and the lady on the phone told me that i don't need to do anything like this. Does anyone know whether the law has changed? Has the lady on the phone missed the question, due to my pidgeon German? Does anyone know what do in these cases?

PS Have checked the
Health Insurance FAQs, to no avail... There is a lot of info about accident insurance in the forum, but not on sickeness.

Obviously I can't tell you exactly what you did! But it sounds like at your previous employer's the offered some kind of group insurance policy and once you left them you needed to have it switched to a private policy (I had to do the same at one time). So if you have not make and changes to your policy since you made the switch then I can see why the woman gave you the answer she did. Best thing to do is confirm it with the HR department of your recent employer.

A word of warning your normal health insurance policy does not include accident insurance - this is normally covered by the employer, so now that you are unemployed you need to make sure you are covered accidents by taken out additional insurance.

Good luck,

Jim.

Re: basic sickness insurance policy when unemployed

Thank for reminding me!

My former employer had a group insurance policy, hence the change. After moving jobs, my policy became not dependent from the employer.
