| | Swiss Car Insurance on Foreign Registered Car?
Simple Question:
Is it possible, and from where, can one buy (fully comprehensive) car insurance on a foreign registered car, pending its Swiss registration in a few months?
(i.e. that I can drive my German registered car on German plates until Swiss approval and fitting of Swiss plates)
Background
- The car has been declared/imported
- A Swiss insurance "nachweis" was obtained and used to get an appointment for the Swiss testing/registration
- There is a long waiting list for testing, and the appointment is not for another couple of months
- The Swiss insurance "nachweis" is (apparently) only evidence of application for insurance - not a real, proper insurance policy on which one can drive

I dont know if the process has changed since I came to Switzerland. When I brought my car over from Canada my neighbour who happens to be an insurance agent insured my car immediately. I took the papers to the Strasseverkehrs office in Chur and they issued me a licence . At the same time I was give an appointment for the test which was to be done a week later. I had to have the headlights changed "Bulbs" and some reflecting stickers applied to the back bumper and some other minor issue. All handled without any problems. I do not understand how the car can be deemed imported yet registered outside of Switzerland..

I know of an insurance company that will possibly insure you.
My agent is a really nice lady from the U.K. and is now residing here in Switzerland. And, she will answer any questions you might have. If you would like, I can put you in contact with her.

I am in a similar situation like you. Can't you just keep the German insurance? After some discussions with my German insurance company, it turned out that it was possible to keep it. I have a thread here about it: German car, insurance and customs |

Zurich were quite happy to insure my UK registered car.
It was a bit pricy compared to other quotes I got, but they were the only company that would cover me before the car was converted and registered here.
Hope this helps |

The companies seem to be incredibly inconsistent on this subject. I just called Zurich and was told it was impossible... Trying Winterthur right now.
I thought I had it all sorted with an agent until this morning when I was told I had to get it swiss registered - now I have V little time left. |

I am planning to drive a US-registered car in Switzerland when I move in April. I will keep the US plates for about 12 months while I go through the process of making it Swiss-legal. It's a fairly expensive and rare exotic so I think it's worth the hassle.
What I need is the name of a Swiss insurance or a Swiss broker that knows how to get me insurance on an Illinois-registered car to be driven in Europe.
Please PM names and phone numbers.

Has anyone got recent experience of this? I am informed that a Swiss insurer may now only insure a Swiss registered car (and that this rule applies across Europe).
So how does anyone export / import a car? I need insurance from purchase in Luxembourg until re-registration to Swiss plates
My car is leased from Luxembourg, I want to buy it and import to Switzerland. (Tax issues are known) I have worked out how to get the registration done at both ends, including export plates from Luxembourg.
But I can't find an insurer...our Luxembourg insurer initially said OK, but then said oops, not on export plates.

as it is imported you will have a stammnummer on i think form 13.40. you can give this to an insurance company and they can issue a policy based on that number.
zurich can and do provide it.
from the date of import you can drive 12 months with your original plates

unfortunately, as we are leaving Luxembourg, we can't register the car there...I'm buying it from the lease company. So it has to be on export plates... |

heckenhocker : new paperwork just sent
