Wife and I have basic coverage with Helsana. Have had it for 14 months now, it took forever for the paperwork to come through, and five or six months for the medical card! Have never had to use the thing since we've not had occasion to visit the doctor, touch wood.

It was one of the cheapest options for our canton and we pay something like CHF230 a month for both of us with the maximum excess (either CHF 2,000 or 2,500 I don't remember which). We did not want to spend several hundred a month and this policy satisfies the local legal requirements. If we had kids I would probably do things differently - i.e would expect to visit the doctors more often so would take a lower excess.

We have Helsana and low excess. I have only been dissappointed with they painfully long card issuing. It's a pain in the butt, it took similarly long, we actually had troubles with this when I was hospitalized for labor. So, they are ok, but take unbelievably long.

Re: Helsana health insurance

I started with Helsana until they put their premiums up, then switched to their cheaper sister company Progres who then also put their premiums up now we are with SanSan, another Helsana company and save CHF 700 a month for 3 people. Got my cards quickly with Progres and SanSan, but Helsana did take a while.

For only 8% i'd prefer to just call the doctor when I am ill and not a pre-diagnosis number first.
