Should I keep my US insurance or go Swiss?

Hi,
I'm moving to Switzerland very soon and am not sure what to do about insurance. I'm 30 years old and in good health, and have no regular expenses other than one monthly, not horribly expensive medication.

I'm finishing up a doctoral program in a US University right now, and am eligible (actually already enrolled) in the University's health insurance program for this academic year. It's good coverage, with a low deductible, and about $2500 for the year. Coverage is the same whether I'm in or out of the country.

I can, if I wish, opt-out of the school program and subscribe to a Swiss insurer. But as far as I can tell, the Swiss insurance tends to be more expensive with worse coverage (I'm thinking particularly of the 'franchise' part, and the decreased travel coverage - I travel a lot). I'm inclined to keep the US insurance.. On the other hand I've read a few things about it being a hassle to get the Swiss govt to accept foreign insurance.

Any opinions would be much appreciated.

S

I suggest that you contact our member Jenny for advice.

There are certain exceptions for students and researchers but I don't know if you would qualify for this.

Re: Should I keep my US insurance or go Swiss?

I did see that, and looked at the Swisscare website. Perhaps I'm being overly paranoid, but the not-very-professional nature of the site (to my snobbish native-English-speaking eyes) made me a bit hesitant. I'd consider it but would like to hear more people's experiences with them first.

Thanks for the note!

One point to consider, if you were allowed to use a foreign insurer, is that you would probably have to pay all the bills yourself and then seek compensation.
