Invoice out of the blue

I was in hospital for 4 days or so at the start of the year. I had to pay a small percentage of the treatment and the medical insurance company picked up the majority of the bill.

Today I received a demand for CHF 550 from the medical insurance company as a percentage of something a good four months after the event. Surely if you are in hospital, the payment side is done and dusted within a few weeks after the visit.

I feel like someone is having a laugh. Any similar experiences.

Often you get sent the bills : you pay them and recover the money from the insurance company later. Check with your insurer.

You haven't given us much to go on, but assuming the hospital charge (excluding treatment) for 4 days was CHF5,500 and was sent directly to and paid by your health fund, then this is your 10%.

Just because it's late doesn't mean you are not liable. If you feel it is incorrect, then you must query this with the organisation that issued it.

Re: Invoice out of the blue

Coming here from Belgium (as I did), it's not unusual to get hospital bills 6-9 months after the treatment. Here I have had bills sent at about 3 months from both Doctors and hospital. Quite normal to me. Means you can keep their money in your bank account.

The insurance company have already paid the bill now they have calculated what you must pay after your excess and 10% etc and bill you for it. Wait till you pay a bill and then wait for the refund they normal reimburse you before the 30 days is up. So you can’t complain about that.

Last year I had about Sfr 30,000 bill settled and that took a couple of months before I heard, maybe they wait a while to see if anymore invoices are forthcoming before doing thier calculations.

ah yes, I can tell you one operation and a week in 'ozzie is 28'000. I payed 58 francs of that - my TV charge + soft drinks.

The bill, surprisingly, will have all of the information on it.

Re: Invoice out of the blue

Bills and the post office are not related. Generally your mail arrives on time, but bills for ops and other "highly wealthy agencies" could arrive months (up to 10 or so) later. Don't just throw it out or you could be facing another bill for admin fees on top of the first one... courts and gov. are prone to this as a way to make more money (my oponion)... Swisscom are also known for this... When in doubt, ask for explanations!

Whilst acknowledging you are talking about Switzerland in this thread... I can say from my experiences in Germany, doctors and hospitals billed on a quarterly basis.
