Student Family Member Insurance changes in Swisscare?

I got a call from Swisscare and the madam told me that my husband can not stay with Swisscare since they changed their product line. And all the family members can apply from its partner (I forget the name...) But the monthly rate has changed from 85CHF to around 200CHF.
My question is I have paied the fee for July till September, then what should I do?

Re: Student Family Member Insurance changes in Swisscare?

Hi, family members cannot be insured by Swisscare nor by another cheap student health insurance since more than a year. This is cause the authorities in some cantons has restricted the insurance plans only for students or researchers and no more for family members.

Means that you cannot insure your family member with a student plan as your wife is not a student.

But in fact the partner company that is provided by Swisscare, named Sanitas is a very good option. And the premiums are the standards "cheap tranche" in Switzerland.

If you as student has an insurance by Swisscare, you must continue your insurance for one year more if you dont cancelled your insurance within the cancellation delay. Swisscare has 3 months delay for the end of the year as this company is a Private one.

But by far, you cannot fine better option for you with the Swisscare plan or only with CSS plan but attention, they not provide all coverage that is provided by Swisscare or with additional premiums.

In fact, advantage with Swisscare is that they cover the "Allgemeine Abteilung" in the package. This is if you need a treatment in another canton as yours. By CSS you have to buy this option additionally and finally your premium is then higher by CSS as SWISSCARE and you have to fill out a full medical questioner for your additional plan (who is not the case by Swisscare).

Both companies are currently leaders on the student insurance (all other companies has medical questioners, restrictions in their plans and this can grow the risk of a coverage refusal if you announce claims.

For the Sanitas, your wife has one of the most efficient company in Switzerland and I think it is a very good solution.

For kids also this is good and you have to know that premiums for kids are around CHF 80 / month + - depending if you choose a franchise (but often no franchise is choosed.)

Finally the solution Swisscare for student or researcher and family members with Sanitas or another company is a very good combination.

Cheers :-)

You right.

But for your information, foreign students health insurance in Switzerland are under a law who is constantly updated in the practice by the cantons.

Companies and their insurance plans also are in constant changes and for this reason, I will update as precisely possible the information that I received as I was self faced to some troubles with health insurance companies.

Re: Student Family Member Insurance changes in Swisscare?

Wang,

How did your situation work out for you? Were you able to stay with Swisscare until September?

I seem to be in a similar situation except that Swisscare has not called us. My husband is the student and I am the spouse. We've been with Swisscare since January and were never informed of the change. I am 33 weeks pregnant and only found out when we tried to register our unborn child with them. My husband has tried to talk to them but their English can be very hard to understand depending on the agent you get. Im not sure what to do but know something needs to be done since I am due very soon and I don't want to be unexpectedly dropped right before the birth.

Re: Student Family Member Insurance changes in Swisscare?

I just wanted to follow up with the VERY quick response I got back from Swisscare after emailing their helpdesk. Just an fyi for anyone in a similar confused situation:

Thank you for your email.

Yes this is correct, you may stay insured with us until you cancel, once you have cancelled however you can not retake our insurance.

Re: Student Family Member Insurance changes in Swisscare?

Hi, good news I just called Swisscare in order to inform you.

1. Family members who already are insured with Swisscare can continue with them without any problems or changes and conditions are not changed.

2. New comers cannot insure their family members with the same plan.

3. New comers can get a free offer on the website of Swisscare for family members or go on www.comparis.ch for other offers.
