UK NHS and Health Insurance

Hi,

I was wondering whether anyone could clear up some confusion about the health insurace obligation. I'll be a student at the uni of Geneva from September for two years so after being there three months I need insurance.

However, I have a Dutch friend at a Swiss university; he has an EHIC card and that covers him here for the whole time. The only difference is that in Holland you buy medical insurance as in Switzerland. He has a medical company on the back of his card whereas I have the NHS number.

Having an EHIC card but on the NHS, do you think that this card would work in the long term also? Are there any Brits around who have had to buy insurance? And if so, what are the cheapest available? I don't get ill much (touch wood!) so I probably wouldn't ever need to use it if I bought it!

Thanks very much!

If you are staying for studying purposes and you have health insurance that covers the same things as the swiss health insurance, you can be freed on request from the mandatory health insurance for three years and, in case, an additional 3 years (6 years max.).

What you have to do is to contact the cantonal office (Service de l'assurance-maladie, SAM in Geneva).

But to benefit from NHS cover the OP would have to be medically evacuated to the United Kingdom. That can be fiercely expensive, which is why the NHS and the FCO warn travellers to buy travel insurance and not to rely solely on the EHIC.

In general, British students in Switzerland should have local insurance if they do not have cover that would assure their evacuation back to the UK.

It might be another story if you had cover from a neighbouring country and could be whisked over the border in a private ambulance.
