Any suggestions on good insurance companies?

Hi all.

My wife and I are currently using Assura ( I think its a broker)
They are fairly useless though and don't add the insurance options that we ask for and don't reply to emails or phone calls if they are not in the mood. Plus we need to pay all bills until we have spent CHF2500. once we have reached that magical number we can then send then all the receipts and they will then start paying for treatment.

Are there any companies that speak English (as ALL our correspondence is in German) and that have good customer service and that aren't horrendously over priced?

Thanks for any help

Re: Any suggestions on good insurance companies?

We use Swica, they have a website in English www.swica.ch , but I have only communicated with them in German. We pay CHF 900 for a family of 5, but this includes dental and accident insurance and we have a small excess of CHF300. I am pretty pleased with their service and quickness at paying bills.
PS - I do believe that you can only change your insurance at the start of a year!

Addition - We also have to pay 10% of any bill, but this is standard in Switzerland I think.

With health insurance here in Switzerland, you can only give your notice a month before the end to start a new one in the new year. That is for normal cover. Extras you need to give 6 months before.

It all depends what you most important criteria is; if it is price then Assura is probably the one to go with. If you don't use it much, then stick with them as the differecne between them is minimal. They are all in a jolly cartel and it's obligatory to have health insurance in Switzeland.

If you prefer you can call these health insurance companies a front for a money printing license, bit like notaries really, one big cartel.

As for your Sfr2'500 francise this you took to get lower monthly premiums. If you don't use your insurance then you are better off having a high franchise. If you do use it, it doesn't make too much difference as you either have a high monthly premium and low franchise or the other way around, it's quite simple to calculate, the only imponderable is whether you use it or not and what level of risk you are comfortable with. I am fortunate, i don't use mine much so i have high franchise and low premiums, relatively speaking.

Re: Any suggestions on good insurance companies?

thanks for the help guys.

I use mine quite a lot. Way past the CHF2500 mark. Just don't like our contact man as he is very difficult to contact or get any work out of. Its taken him 9 days to get our new mountain bikes insured. Ridiculous.

Re: Any suggestions on good insurance companies?

The last dates for cancelling the insurance extra cover varies a lot!

If the premiums have not increased then Assura requires you to have been a customer for 5 years and then give 6 months notice to quit!

You may want to contact Jenny on this forum, she is a broker and was professional and very well informed on insurance requirements and did a great job for us.

That is not always true! Some companies inc Assura want 6 months!
As soon as they announce a price incrase you have 30 days to jump out, Assura included or if you make a claim you can also jump out

It is fine to get recommendations from other members, but make sure that the company is right for your circumstances.

The cheapest is not necessarily the best.

Re: Any suggestions on good insurance companies?

There was a survey recently in a consumer magazine about the customer satisfaction with health insurance companies. Surprise, Assura was the worst company. I'm very pleased with SWICA, which was actually ranked second.
