If there are any cool ballads along the lines of "The Wild Colonial Boy" , "The Black Velvet Band", or "Wac Fol The Diddle" I may have to learn Swiss-German!

Re: socio-political and economics Switzerland vs. Austria

Austria was not a brutal empire. It was an empire, sometimes no fun for some parts of the population, but that doesn't mean it was generally brutal, unless you call, say, the USA a brutal empire.

I grew up pretty close to the Austrian border. I never experienced any problems other than some mutual teasing. Wars and the like are part of a far past.

Mr. Breakfast's story doesn't cover the entire truth. He heard it from his famous Uncle What's-his-face, and even that guy is not always a reliable source. Just like those Austrian officers, take it with a pinch of salt.

When the Swiss started cracking Austrian jokes (I think in the early 'eighties), those were all about all Austrians being stupid, exactly as East-Frysia jokes in Germany, Georgia jokes in the USA, Pontioi jokes in Greece etc. Practically at the same time, Austrians began cracking Swiss jokes, in which all Swiss were gay. I don't think there was a single Swiss joker who really believed that all Austrians are morons, and I'm sure not a single Austrian joker thought that all Swiss are homo.

By the way, in my opinion, the Swiss tourist industry could learn quite a bit from Austria. And that is not a joke.

Re: socio-political and economics Switzerland vs. Austria

so glad to read Captain Greybeards thoughts about Austria / Swiss.
Most of us love the Austrian, we love their country and we sure enjoy their hospitality.
Indeed we could learn a lot about how to accommodate visitors.

Yes we do make jokes about each other, some of them funny others

here comes a joke

not funny, because they are true...hihi

Austria sucks at skiing while Switzerland is awesome at skiing?
Hmmm. An Austrian just beat two Swiss at the Lauberhorn downhill race (=at their home turf).
Still a great performance by Didier Cuche and Carlo Janka.

I will admit it: I do not remember European history - AND, being a third away around the globe, I am not sure I was ever taught correctly about it anyway.

Tell me - can anyone here tell me about a term called "Waldfrevel"?
Nobody ever gets history taught correctly ,in I think"Waldfrevel" no idea, but Landjeager is Austria

Waldfrevel is an offence against forest laws. Does that help in any way, especially in the context of this thread?

I seriously would like a summary about European history that has something to do with why Swiss think negatively of Austria - For any reason at all

...and while you're at it, please feel free to speak your opinions of your other neighbors such as France and Germany as well. ...and that other tiny little country that as an American I have a tough time spelling.

Any empire which elects George W Bush...twice and inflicts him on the world is brutal IMHO.

The Austrian Empire was the basis of continental-wide wars for centuries.

Wars are brutal.

Indeed, I like Austria a lot, and have quite a few friends there.

But, that doesn't change the fact that there are very real historical reasons for a Swiss dislike of the place. The Ireland/UK relationship is similar.

Yes, but certain people mistake countries, i.e. Switzerland/Sweden, Austia/Austalia, or Switzerland/Chile (due to the country code CH).

These meagre offerings they placed before the officers of the Austrian cavalry, who snorted contemptuously at the honest peasants standing before them, before galloping into the village, spearing children as they passed by, lifting them up and eating them raw, straight off their swords.
Could this be true? It sounds like a fable to me. I would not downplay the violence of what happened, but seriously - this:

Quote:
The sight of the officers of the Austrian cavalry devouring innocent Swiss children like so many shish kebabs, blood running down their chins, their tunics stained and dripping

Sounds more like a tale than reality.

As seen in his photo, Dougal is a man with fine tastes. But sometimes the world--dare I say--gets the better of even him. Occasionally he will get a bad batch of Cuban cigars loaded with some funny stuff causing historical hallucinations and free associations with cheeses.

Thank you for the lesson. It's always good to learn new things.

I was right about the Swiss making Saabs though, wasn't I?
