Pope on Fast Track to Sainthood

The Pope deceased, John Paul II, is to be"fast-tracked" to sainthood (???) because a French nun with Parkinson's disease prayed to him and recovered!!
Hallelujah - praise the Lord!!

Please excuse me if I am somewhat sceptical............

What's your opinion on this?

If it is in the news.... it most be true!

If people believes that Jesus walked on the water, multiply bread and fish and change water in wine, and came back to life, why not believing that praying someone can save / heal them?

It doen't hurt and if it gives someone a sense in life... good for them.

Some people also believe in fairies. How nice.

I believe that he cannot be canonised a Saint until "another miracle"occurs.
He has passed the initial "Beatification" though because of the first miracle.
I am sure that it won't be long till he is canonised though - I have mixed feelings about this...

Apparently, when Popey does his "Urbi et Orbi" thingy, then you don't actually have to be present to get the effects of the blessing.....
Amazing!!
So don't worry if you have to record the whole business, you are still blessed, my son....

I've got a cousin who does long distance Reiki healing - not going to be made into a Saint though!

Leni, I feel the same as you do about the whole thing.:msnshock:

Popular actors receive a star on the walk of fame, popular popes are beatified I guess. And JPII was the catholic's super-star. They're just trying to benefit from his enormous popularity even after he has passed away.

I'm rather taken aback by the tone of this thread.

If you were debating a fact, with pro's and con's.. it could be interesting.
If you were comparing beliefs or discussing the evolution of a religion throughout the ages, why not ?.. it could be educational.
If you were trying to explain the procedure that leads to beatification and then sainthood, it could be informative.
If you were interested in the meaning of Urbi et Orbi, it could be linguistic and historical

But.... is that what you're doing ?

And by the way "Urbi et Orbi" is a blessing, it's not a thingy. It's a blessing about forgiveness and grace and mercy

That's because it is in fashion and politically correct to do so nowadays. Besides Vatican has a bad press since a couple centuries in the homeland of many EFers.
Try to provoke these same guys to do the same on current tabu topics and suddenly they'll realize that Internet is not really anonymous and that someone could use it against them and they'll not say a word or fight on the "correct" side. But that's the culture which coined "if you can't beat them, join them".

I'm not interested in winding anybody up in any way, I absolutely could not be bothered, nor do I care.
Just a little respect for different beliefs would be nice though..

Yacek, how do you decide what the 'correct' side is?

Sorry but I have a point of view too, and I am willing to discuss anything you like - no boundaries.
I don't believe in Pope.based fairy tales....sorry about that.

That's fine, but then perhaps it could be written as a point of view, an opinion ?
Perhaps you didn't intend to write that way but it does come across as a laugh.
It's a faith which some people believe in.

i personally am not a believer in such things either, but at the same time i keep the smug attitude to myself. your "willingness" to have a discussion is disingenuous because you approach the subject with arrogance and contempt for the other side. you can't really have a civil conversation when your default position regarding another person's BELIEFS is that they're a damned fool for having them, unlike yourself, who has grown past fairy tales.

Yes, Sky , I am aware of that and I am sorry if i have offended you.
I didn't mean that.
I am maybe a little bit sceptical here and just wanted to discuss it.

Not for me Leni, (though yes I'm Roman Catholic), just in general for the people who have a strong belief in their faith.
I don't believe in saints (happens) or the sanctity of a normal man, but I do believe in the goodness of a blessing and a prayer and the exponential positive energy that is created.
The Urbi et Orbi is a lovely blessing of hope
Honestly, I'll take a true blessing any day

Re: Pope on Fast Track to Sainthood

I am not even a believer, so I am not sure if my opinion counts, but I have been translating catholic poets, catholic faith interests me and a good religious debate too, respek, people! Where is the love.

I say, make him a saint. I have admiration and respect for that man. He was educated and caring, the personal letters my grandpa kept, that were from JPII to a no-name philosopher, country school principal and beekeeper stuck in Czech commie mountains, were interesting. Gave him hope and to the whole village, when faith was illegal and people being executed. Anyone doing that should be made saint.

I think it is too easy to be cool and shoot people's faith down. I think I would rather participate in shooting down Greenpeace, fruitarians and freedom fighters, but that wouldn't be too cool either.
