Oxfordshire County Library Closures 2011 Budget Cuts

20 of 43 Libraries in Oxfordshire are set to loss funding at the end of this year by the Oxfordshire County Council. Budget tightening/cuts is the new government mantra.

Of all things to reduce/cut spending, public libraries represent what is great about the human spirit; a repository of ideas, music, thoughts from great minds, a place for people of all ages to meet, an alternative to the fast food instant information age of: internet, mobile phones, blackberries, iPods.

My local library, in Summertown, is among those listed to close, and there is a great deal of evidence the building and land will be sold by the County Council to developers in this much sought-after neighborhood of north Oxford.

I usually don't get rilled up about things, but this one made me meet my moral tipping point.

Re: Oxfordshire County Library Closures 2011 Budget Cuts

I like libraries and use them here in Switzerland, and have fond memories of visiting my local library in the UK as a kid, but many didn't move with the times. I think if they were a place for ipods/ipads, blackberry's etc maybe people would use them more. Unfortunately the books they have get older and more old fashioned every year and so they are becoming less and less relevant. Lack of investment killed them, the same thing happened with youth clubs...

If I see kids hanging out on the street I don't blame them, where else can they go?

Well they can go to the library and select interesting books, magazines, newpapers, CD discs. This past week I checked out Paul Auster's Moon Valley, read the Economist, UK Jazz, BBC Classic Music Magazine, found a book about Chile and S. Korea, witnessed a children's book session with the librarian reading them a story to their wonderment, saw elderly people from the community come to have a quiet read and have some social contact, instead of sitting alone at home.
