No. That would be many thousands of Chinese workers leading so desperate lives that the operator of the plant (Foxconn) has to set up safety nets to stop them jumping off the factory buildings to kill themselves... but the products are shiny.

Re: Steve Jobs takes another leave of absence

Apple make inferior products, which are often copies of their rivals but with fewer features and cost more.

However Apple have nailed the user experience bit. They make easy to use, shiny and cool toys and then market them well. This is how they have succeeded.
All they need is for the next CEO to be able to pick out "cool" products and for the marketing team to stay with the company and they will continue to do fine.
Apple have a plan and losing SJ won't change that. I imagine Cook has been groomed to take over since SJ's last absence.

Can't think of any of there products that fit this bill? ok the cost more bit is right, but inferior?? fewer features?? (flash aside).

try using a web browser on most mobile devices and its a truely painful experience, then try on an ipad / ipod / iphone for example.

Re: Steve Jobs takes another leave of absence

Jobs certainly turned Apple around again a few years ago. The products I think are very expensive for what they are but that is opinion. In terms of stress using my mac book pro is much better than any windows PC I have ever had, but it wasn't value for money.

The iphone is way too expensive (and the last version unreliable) which is why Android devices are now killing it. I think Apples better days are behind them...

I could take issue with that, but that's for another day and another thread.

While I agree that Cook is almost certainly positioned to take over the role of CEO should Jobs not return, I believe that in the absence of anybody else it will be Phil Schiller (top marketing droid) that becomes the public face of Apple. During Jobs' last leave of absence it fell to Schiller to present the keynotes, and while it wasn't the same without Jobs, he didn't do a bad job.

Speculation aside, and as much as I dislike the man, I do wish him well, and hope that he comes back to give me more stuff that I can get angry about.

really? bare in mind lots of companies make android phones of varying specs and only apple make the iphone, i'm 100% possitive any one of the andriod makers would love to have the iphones unit sale figures.

I can walk into any phone shop and pickup an android handset, for little or no money, I have to order an iphone and pay for it, that tells you how popular they are, if there was little demand then they would be free.

same with the ipod, over the years I have had a lot of mp3 players, give it 6 months and they are no longer supported, bugs are not fixed etc etc Apples genius is keeping there products alive and keeping them simple, I recently bought an ipod and it totally wipes the floor with anything I had before, install VLC (free) on it and I don't even had to convert my films / tv series to play on it.

I am not really criticising Apple, it is a decision they make and it works. You are right as well about the browsing.
The original iPhone wasn't really a smart phone. You couldn't send MMS or install any apps that weren't already integrated, it wasn't even the first with a touch screen. Technically it was pretty basic and didn't do anything new. What it did do was do things better and it looked cool.
Same with the ipod, it was miles behind alternatives from iRiver and archos etc. but it had a funky dial control and came in great colours.

It is how Apple do it, I think that will continue to be their plan.

And with 800,000 people working at Foxconn (it's a big place), the suicide rate is around the national average.
Erm... I believe you fell for their PR: China is not a very homogenuous country. It is quite the opposite: Huge urban parts on the one side and vast basically pre-industrial agricultural rural parts. The suicide rate is not equally spread: Young men kill themselves unbelievably often in the poor rural parts while the richer cities are better. So if Foxconn in a city is around the national average - it is in fact far from an average place.

Maybe so, but 10 or so people out of 800,000 still isn't very many. And would appear to be a lot less than what you were perhaps suggesting in your post.

You also pointed the finger at Apple where in fact, as I said, almost all consumer electronics made in China is made in the same way and most at one of the same few companies.
