Cat summoned for jury duty at Boston court

A cat has received a jury duty summons after his owner put his name on the pets section of a census form.

Tabby Sal has been called to sit in judgement at a US court, even though owner Anna Esposito filed for his disqualification on the grounds he was ‘unable to speak and understand English’.

Bizarrely, officials denied the request, meaning Sal and Mrs Esposito may have to attend a Boston court on March 23.

The cat is currently searching for a get-out 'claws'.

The bemused owner said: ‘When they ask him guilty or not guilty, what’s he supposed to say – meow?’
A U.S judicial branch website states that 'jurors are not expected to speak perfect English'.

having done jury duty a couple of times in Boston I can guarantee you that English is hardly a requirement at all ( but most of my fellow juror's did have a level at least slightly above a kitty'kat'kat )

Re: Cat summoned for jury duty at Boston court

The owner should have filed saying that the cat "was not human". People often use the language excuse to try to get out of jury duty, so the courts are wary of that response and are probably programmed to nix it.

But the whole thing makes me wonder how the cat got summoned in the first place. In California, they used to pull jurors from people who were registered to vote. Then people got wary to that fact and stopped registering, so they started pulling from the DMV list.

So does that mean the owner registered the cat to vote??

I did argue in the jury room that given his job this should have been considered a job benefit.. but I think we gave him about 30K ... that was mid 1980's

Interesting, how did he prove he had lost these senses?
"Can you smell this?"
"No"
"OK, here's 30 grand"

Re: Cat summoned for jury duty at Boston court

the "proof of damages" was determined in a prior case... the case I sat on was simply to determine financial damages.
The guy was mid 20's with no sense of smell or taste for presumably the rest of his life.

Can you imagine not being able to smell your wife's homemade apple pie?

...that's pretty harsh. I love food and I went crazy when I had this cold and I couldn't taste anything. Was the accident caused by negligence or..what was the reason for him receiving the 30g's?

As I said... proof of damages was decided in a prior case...it must have been determined to be negligence on the part of the company he worked for as we had to decide how much his sense of smell was worth.

gotcha....so ya'll huddled and decided that his sense of smell was worth 30 grand..let's see, he was in his mid twenties..having another good 50 years of life to look forward to...that's like 600$ a year!
