Libya - 17 Feb "Day of wrath"

Day of Wrath or Anger in Libya today. Already some protests started yesterday. Reports on twitter mention 2 deaths after riots.
Inside reports mention movement of military troops from Tripoli to Benghazi.
Here some links:
- Libyan youth movement.
- Twitter hashtags: #feb17 #libya #almokhtar

Almokhtar refers to Omar Elmokhtar the libyan hero who fought italian occupation.

Re: Libya - 17 Feb "Day of wrath"

Gadaffi took all his money away many months ago, to punish us all after arresting his thuggish son.

But I understand the Libyan secret police are not very pleasant, and this demonstration might become very nasty. The local protesters are very brave!

Re: Libya - 17 Feb "Day of wrath"

A sad guess: Western supported dictators have to pretend they have legitimacy beyond brute force. Other dictators don't have too. Western supported dictators allow foreign media in the demonstrations, others don't have to.

The Libyan & Iranian revolution will end with many protesters dead, but the dictators will remain.

I'll be very happy to come back to this post a month from now and see how wrong I was

Several demonstations in the streets of Benghazi last night. The police was using live bullets and 15-20 deads reported. The army is now deployed in Benghazi. The funerals may lead to new demonstrations in the city.

Seems to be spreading across the country - it will get very bloody for the poor demonstrators.

Re: Libya - 17 Feb "Day of wrath"

According to twitter feed
- mercenaries from subsaharian countries fighting against libyans in Benghazi
- city of Bayda (near benghazi) under citizen control after police decided to join anti-Kadaffi protests.

What I don't get is this: why not reform or even step down and remain a hero in your country when you know that protests aren't going to end well and you will eventually have to flee and be in a coma for God knows how long??!?

Re: Libya - 17 Feb "Day of wrath"

One of Kadafi's major achievements: he succeeded in changing the country's name from simply LIbya to this: Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya

Re: Libya - 17 Feb "Day of wrath"

Things are accelerating in Libya. Hundreds of people killed during demonstrations. There are reports of libyan army units splitting and joining the anti-Kadhafi demonstrators in Benghazi and liberating the city.

Kadhafi is threatening EU of suspending immigration agreement if they interfere and support demonstrators; that would let thousands of subsaharian immigrants arrive on the south european shores.

One of ther first things I noticed when I moved to Libya, were the number of cars with Swiss number plates. It didn`t take long to realise that there were a lot of Swiss connections with Libya. I am not at all surprised that there would be Libyan money here.

Just as in the other countries, the army is key. If a substantial number support the protestors then they have a chance.
It will not be enough for protestors to control the East of the country; if they only do that then the security forces will be back in greater strength & it will turn into a civil war. The protestors must have wider goals & look for total victory.

Kadhafi is a thug; I hope the EU does not bow to his threats.

What are the Libyans wanting? When I was living there, it was interesting to note , in Tripoi, that the Libyans did not do any of the menial jobs. It was left to the Africans from over the southern borders ( often there illegally) to do the road sweeping, be household cleaners etc. The Libyans drove cars, motorbikes, took buses and taxi`s. I was considered odd because I rode a bicycle - the locals considered that only `poor`people ( the Africans) used bicycles.

Sure, one would not want to get on the wrong side of Gadaffi, but it did seem to me that the majority of people were happy with their lives - including the British women whom I knew, who were married to Libyans and happily bringing ( or brought) up their children there, rather than heading for the UK.

Is this all to do with international oil??
