I agree that would be ideal, and that's what I've done for years.

But sometimes you are in a rush, maybe you are coming back from a job interview, or your train was late. Sometimes, you just have to buy lunch or dinner.
But you're talking about the exception (unless a college student or low wage earner goes to a job interview everyday).
The expansion of subway into a global success is due to the fact that people go there very frequently, perhaps everyday and not once in a blue moon.

Bro, I'm gonna be depressed all day now that you mention Greggs! Got one very close to me back home (as well as KFC, Subway, McDs and all the other bada$$ fast food outlets). Can't wait to get my gnashers into one of their chicken mix sarnies and delicious doughnuts. MEGA YUM!!!

Note to self: Gotta stop swinging by this particular thread. Brings back too many wonderful fast food chain memories.
I could kill a cheese and onion pasty just now

Did you get macaroni pies in England?

There was a Subway in Richmond but I never tried it as it looked so unattractive and unappealing. A really good chain, however, is Paul (don't know if they have reached Switzerland). They have lovely fresh bread - normally baguettes, with very fresh, imaginative and tasty fillings. Also do amazing cakes.

Being on a sandwich roll , I don't know about anyone else but I stopped going to Pret, as I got bored of their sandwiches very quickly. Also, they only ever used malted brown bread, which I'm not keen on, and what is more smoked salmon should only every be served on wholemeal brown!!
Lol, yeah Paul isa chain like Hermes or Teuscher are chains.

There is hope for those of you who miss Greggs' bakeries: they have some in Belgium.

As they've already made a bridgehead on the Continent, it's only a matter of time before they open up in Zurich, Basel and Geneva...

Never heard of a macaroni pie before, so I guess not (not down South anyway).

While I'm not a huge Subway fan, I think it has its place in the American food system. Let's say you are a college student or a mininum wage earner, and you have to make the choice: McDonald's or Subway. There isn't any other option in your price range. Then what do you do? If you want to at least a vegetable that isn't the one lonely pickle, you choose Subway.

It's really a choice of the lesser of two evils.

But here in Switzerland, does it have a place? I think so, but maybe a slightly different one. Down in the Selnau area you can have lunch at a nice Vietnamese place (CHF20+ per meal), Hiltl (CHF25+ per meal), and some cafes and bars for about the same price. So, if you are hungry, in that specific location, and unwilling to pay CHF20+ for a meal, it's not a bad idea. I passed there the Saturday before last around noon, and there was a massive line of younger, probably single guys (people most likely unable to have the facilities or the abilities to cook).

I'm glad I can cook and make delicious meals on a budget. But not everyone can. I think Subway placed that franchise well in an area that doesn't have a lot of budget options. Ideally, the quality would be higher, but this isn't an ideal world.
But a six inch sub costs around CHF10 from memory. Make it into a proper sized portion and add a drink and I bet you don't get much change from a CHF20. For that money you can get something far tastier, healthier and satisfying from the Vietnamese you mention. You also left out McDonalds at Stauffacher, but the less said about that the better.

But if we can persuade Milla Jovovich to join all the other celebrities who live in Switzerland, we might just be in with a chance...

What? It is not that expensive (if that is what you mean) - and you do get what you pay for.

Sorry DB, I know that Greggs is popular in the UK, but it never did it for me.

It doesn't do it for me either: I don't eat bread, pies and pasties.

That doesn't change the fact that Greggs are brilliant!

Well, if greasy sausage (never seen a pig in their life ...) rolls are your thing, then the sooner Greggs hits Switzerland, the better!
