Syria is still in the Human rights commitee of UNESCO.

The UN is still a sad combination of malice & incompentence.

Re: Syria - It ain't over till it's over

Seems some people from the Libya militias are joining the Syrian opposition.
Must be a difficult journey especially if you want to take some decent weapons with you so I assume there are not many there,

The Libyan militias were less than impressive in their campaign. If NATO wouldn't have stepped (flown) in they would be dead. or wishing they were.

There are weapons going to the rebells from Lebanon and probably Turkey - but Assad is better equipped & organized. Unless the rebells get some serious help they will lose this round.

2 foreign journalists were killed yesterday.

Assad has the opposition where he wants it: ill equipped, ill organized & fighting dirty. His Army will probably win, then his "intelligence" apparatus will kick in.

Still no mass demonstrations in the west against Assad.

So long as he can limit the number of people deserting from his army to relatively small numbers then you are probably correct.

Now Hamas is turning against Assad. Until a few months ago their leadership was based in Damascus, now they show their loyalty is for rent.

Wonder if this will effect the cosy relationship where Syria ships Iranian arms to Hamas?
Maybe they will not need arms as they see how effective peaceful revolution has been in this part of the world.
& will Hamas also criticise Iran for supporting Syria?

On the other hand the Hamas guy was standing outside a mosque in Egypt & that country recently had a fairly bloodless revolution so I doubt he could have supported Assad without risk of being lynched......

Hamas is also distancing itself from Iran - It's looking for support from Egypt's muslim brothers (same ideology).

We haven't seen the end of Egypt's revolution - interesting days ahead.

Looks like some Arab countries will arm the rebels; they probably already are but now they will seriously ramp up.
I suppose it will now turn into a proxy war involving Iran?

The extra weapons will only prolong a very bloody civil war - Assad's army will always be stronger and better organized. He, and the Alawi minority will fight on - the Russians and chinese will keep selling him weapons.

Remember Qaddafi's "Zenga Zenga" speech ? Assad is implementing it - his forces are now going through Homs rounding up "the opposition".

That is unfair, and it is not nice to have fun about someone just because he has different opinion than what you have.

How is it unfair? You don't think what's going on in Syria is a horrible thing and yet, oddly, has nothing to do with America and, therefore, feel no need to comment on it? Would you advocate that we all stay out of it and watch from the sidelines? Would you advocate that the oh-so-effective 'UN' do something? If NATO or the UN chooses to 'do something' and America refuses to participate, will anything happen besides meetings in expensive hotels?

The U.K is finally sending aid to Syria, mission led by an MP no less !

The aid won't go to Syrians though, and the mission is supportive of Assad.

Your statement is MISleading ! The U.K. is NOT sending aid to Syria ! The U.K. sends aid to Gaza, but routes it via Latakia.

I just wonder whether they want to get forward through Lebanon and then negotiate with Israel at the Lebanese-Israeli border or whether they want to get via Damascus to Jordan and then negotiate with Israel at the Jordanian-Israeli border.

I can only guess that Egypt refused them landing at el-Arish, in fear that the Brits would have made a lot of fuss about every single stolen item there.

I in their place would proceed via Jordan, as I have full confidence into the reliability of the Royal Jordanian Army

---

May I ask you to abstain from confusing things in that region which to most outsiders already is complicated enough even further !

The only point where I agree is that the Ba'ath Party office in Latakia would not be my choice as trusted partner

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A productive way forward would be if Israel sealed off a seaport-section on Israeli territory (south of Ashkelon) to be used as seaport for Gaza, controlled and supervised by the Israeli armed forces and the Israeli customs authorities. That seaport could gradually be extended into the Gaza Territory, everything under tight surveillance. SGS Surveillance and the UN could be included in the matter. It would be positive business for BOTH Israel AND Gaza ! Why SGS ? Because I am fully aware of there being ZERO trust between the two local partners

The daily killing of civilians continue in Syria. The UN human rights keeps silent: Arab on Arab violence is not something it condmemns.
