The problem in Syria would be a lot easier to solve if millions of young men hadn't just simply ran away. Leaving women, children, elderly and infirm in a desperate situation.
There are millions of refugees in the countries surrounding Syria. What is your source to say they are young men and not women, children, elderly and infirm?

to get out of disaster was NOT simple
lots of women and choldren also fled
many of the old urged the Young to get out
lots of homes and Shops are destroyed
many towns in Egypt are business-wise Syrian-dominated
many Syrians now in France Switzerland Germany have their families in Egypt Lebanon Cyprus to follow as soon as possible

Any army that consists of conscripts will never achieve the success level of professional soldiers. Fighting alongside Iranians and Libyans is also not an ideal way to build a patriotic force
The US were using the draft until after Vietnam (including WW1 and WW2), the Wehrmacht was based on mandatory service since the mid-30ies, Israel does still, and many more.

The main determinants are motivation and of course firepower.

the elderly try to rescue what is still existing of the household. Tragic is how many children perished enroute to Europe

the USA did NOT have draft until the Lusitania and NOT between 1920 and Pearl Harbor, only partially during the war in Korea but NOT until the Tonking Incident

BBC news and TV reporting a Chlorine gas attack on the rebels in Aleppo, using a barrel bomb. 4 dead and many injured.

The UN is investigating this as another war crime.

Don't you find it odd that whenever the rebels are on the ropes, fresh reports of chlorine gas attacks pop up in the BBC? The reports are never substantiated but images of babies wearing gas masks are enough to make your typical BBC/CNN/etc.,.. reader come to conclusions. Also, the deaths attributed are never in large numbers but always include a mother and child. Seems like a standard barrel bomb would be more effective and folks like yourself probably wouldn't be bothered to post up a link.

My thoughts exactly.

Would Russia or Assad wait a full year, and only use them after having pushed back the insurgents significantly?

Conspiracy anyone ?

The Rebels are hanging on, in some cases encircling Assad's forces - it makes sense that Assad is using his airforce to kill his own civilans, as usual.

"Sultan Recep I will NOT rescue the arses of the rebels who apparently sided with Mr Gülen" This is a very convenient way to both escape the Syrian quagmire and simultaneously make friends with Putin.

"THIS time he will go through. WITH Russian Support to absolute victory" Russia has been there for nearly a year without making much reported progress. They withdrew a lot of their forces some months ago so reducing their abilities.
Russia is in the same quagmire as everybody else.
It is estimated their Syria campaign costs ca. $4m per day which is quite small, it is estimated that the US spends two or three times that for their Syria campaign..
Russia relies on the Syrian army to gain ground but they are not exactly first class soldiers!

Launching sea based missiles is very expensive but Russia only did that once.

"it makes sense that Assad is using his airforce to kill his own civilans, " Both Russia and Assad are using low cost weaponry where accuracy is very poor so killing civilians will happen.
Smart weapons would multiply the Russians daily campaign costs.

This is an email by Hilary Clinton private email server from dec 2012, (incorrectly dated by Wikileaks to 2001).

Quote:
The best way to help Israel deal with Iran's growing nuclear capability is to help the people of Syria overthrow the regime of Bashar Assad.
[...]
Iran's nuclear program and Syria's civil war may seem unconnected, but they are.
What worries me is not that such an email exists, but that my news outlet of reference, New York Times, doesn't dedicate it a single line.

There is nothing in the email which isn't common knowledge. Except, perhaps, misunderstaning Russia (also not news)

There is an analysis on NYT saying that because it is a proxy civil war all parties have incentive to target civilians of the opposing side, and that it is likely to escalate even further.

Re: Syria - It ain't over till it's over

Situation now getting very complicated.
The Turks invaded Syria on the pretext of fighting ISIS but actually are now fighting the Kurds.
Kurds have succeded in killing Turkish soldiers

Both side are supported by the US and using US weapons

Sooner or later the US will have to pick sides

Source (worth reading)

Positive point, this should allow some refugees to go home

USSR--Russia has been involved in Syria since the days of the children's doctor of the devil. Dr Med Nureddin el-Atassi in the 1960ies. They hoped to get out when air force commander General Hafez al Assad rose to power ... but when they losz their naval bases in Port Said and Damietta ans Alexandria and Mersa Materuh in the 70ies they had to shift to the Syrian Tihama and the Assad Clan

The war in Syria drags on. Syrian prisons were always the stuff of nightmares, but they got worse. much worse.
