Putin will withraw most russian troops. the visit to Syria wasn't announced in advance - Syria is not much safer than Iraq, the war is still not over, but there is a limit to how many secret funerals even Putin have afford.
Allegedly Russia is using the same solution as the USA - employing an external contractor group providing the mercenaries:

Putin helped Syria in it's fight against Islamist terrorist. He and Assad killed many more civilians than terrorists using poison gas, hospital & school bombing, stravation, rape - the usual Russian approach. If Assad stay on he will a russian vassal like Kadyrov.

Assad released the Islamists from his jails at the begining of the protests - transorming them into a bloody civil war.
This escalation happened because, among others, some western powers (Obama time gov't and CIA, made visible by Benghazi attack: Politco: Obama DOJ drops charges against alleged broker of Libyan weapons) started supplying weapons in an effort to orchestrate another civil was as in Iraq. And after Iraq they knew exactly what they were pushing the country into.

Western powers?
Qatar and Turkey were shipping arms as early as 2012.

Here is a good list of weapons suppliers.

Wagner group - interestingly, from your link:
"Families of killed PMCs are prohibited from talking to the media under a non-disclosure that is a prerequisite for them to get compensation from the company. The standard compensation for the family of a killed Wagner employee is up to 5 million rubles (about 80,000 dollars), according to a Wagner official.[26] In contrast, the girlfriend of a killed fighter stated the families are paid between 22,500 and 52,000 dollars depending on the killed PMC's rank and mission.[112]"

I guess that's one way of hiding casualites.

It's also not surprsing that the U.S armed rebels.

And this list reads like who's who of US/western allies for one side of the conflict. And everybody knew that would just add fuel to the fire. And it would be enough to simply stop buying gas and oil from Russia and Saudi Arabia to pressure them.

Because the Syrian Civil War was and is also a proxy war between east/west and Sunni/Shia.

Re: Syria - It ain't over till it's over

Russian warplane shot down in north-west Syria.
Russia says pilot died after Su-25 jet brought down near rebel-held town of Saraqeb in Idlib province

Preliminary information suggested a portable ground-to-air missile was used to hit the plane in an area under the control of al-Qaida’s Syrian link, the ministry’s Zvezda TV reported.

Source

If the rebels have managed to get their hands on a reliable supply of portable ground-to-air missiles that will change the war dynamics there

Of course, jets usually fly too high and fast for these missiles to be really useful unless the operators are both well trained and skilled but if the jets fly low level strafing missions then they are more at risk

Reports that Dozens of Russians (probably mercenaries) were killed by U.S forces in Syria.

Currently fighting in Syria:
Turkey
Iran
Hizzbullah (Lebanese Shia)
U.S
Kurds
Al Qaeda/IS
Israel (bombing Iranian /Hizb Targets in Syria)
Russian Army/Navy/airforce
Russian merecenaries

Almost forgot - the Syrian Army.

At least the U.K,Australia & France stopped their air attacks in Syria.

I can't remember a recent war with so many actors (Maybe Congo ?)

Don't forget the Nuclear-Spying Lizards. Coming to a conflict near you.

Rex Tillerson's due in Lebanon this week. Should be interesting to see how he's received. Lebanon's basically back to square one as Syria's whipping boy.

Re: Syria - It ain't over till it's over

Quote:
More than 200 contract soldiers, mostly Russians fighting on behalf of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, died in a failed attack on a base held by U.S. and mainly Kurdish forces in the oil-rich Deir Ezzor region, two of the Russians said. The U.S. official put the death toll in the fighting at about 100, with 200 to 300 injured, but was unable to say how many were Russians.

The Russian assault may have been a rogue operation, underscoring the complexity of a conflict
Last week’s offensive began about 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of the Euphrates River de-confliction line late Feb. 7, when pro-Assad forces fired rounds and advanced in a “battalion-sized formation supported by artillery, tanks, multiple-launch rocket systems and mortars,” Colonel Thomas F. Veale, a spokesman for the U.S. military, said in a statement.
The U.S., which has advisers stationed at the base alongside Syrian Democratic Forces troops, responded with aircraft and artillery fire.

It’s not clear who was paying the Russian contingent, whether it was Russia directly, Syria, Iran or a third party. Reports in Russian media have said Wagner -- a shadowy organization known as Russia’s answer to Blackwater, now called Academi -- was hired by Assad or his allies to guard Syrian energy assets in exchange for oil concessions.

Most of those killed and injured were Russian and Ukrainian, many of them veterans of the separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine, according to Alexander Ionov, who runs a Kremlin-funded group that fosters ties to separatists and who’s personally fought alongside pro-government forces in Syria.

Wow. Hundreds of Russian mercenaries roaming around with tanks, artillery, etc. just picked the wrong base to attack? Well, it is Syria I guess.

Carrying out a traditional style attack on a US occupied base that can call in overwhelming air support is suicidal, as they just proved!

But what was the point?

Arab countries caught spying Eagles & Sharks, the Iranians have to keep up with the Joneses.

Lebanon is so used to being a whipping boy, it is now out of sorts when Syria isn't there, so they have outsourced the whipping to Hizbullah.

The death of only a few Russians was communicated on some social sites recently, there are no other proofs yet that so many hired Russians died in the skirmish.

Sputnik's claiming it's all a misinformation campaign and this didn't happen and what's worse is it was aggression from the US, so we can take what we want from this response. Must have been a hell of a battle if so many were involved.

Which btw explains the "Russian" fighters in Ukraine even though Russia said they had no personnel there.

Russian president concedes military intelligence officers were operating in the [Ukraine] country but insists it’s not the same as regular Russian troops

Re: Syria - It ain't over till it's over

There's money to be made, by hook or by crook.

In a deal with the Syrian government, 25% of profits from oil fields captured from Daesh - or whoever, Damascus doesn't care if it's Kurds or Americans or Polite Little Green People - goes to those who do the capturing. ("Please stick around, we can't fight the SLA / Kurds / US / ISIS / Lizards on our own" - Brother Bashir.)

As Russia doesn't do 'boots on the ground' but does enjoy money, it looks to the tried and tested approach of using Crimean battle hardened Russians and sympathisers mercenaries, in this case seemingly the private paramilitary group Wagner. The money, of course, goes up to the organisation most likely behind the paying of the mercenaries - Evro Polis, a business originating from a friend of Vlad's which used to be in catering, but now somehow is involved in oil trading. Don't ya love hard working enterprise?

BlackwaterAcademi vs Wagner offer plausible deniability to everyone concerned. No surprises, then, as 'twas ever thus. See Francis Drake, Cecil Rhodes.

I can only assume the plight of refugees is of no consequence.

The US is so much nicer, they don't even use the US citizens because of the backlash back home when the dead or Rambo shoot'em all scarred suicidal guys come back; they send Syrians instead. Before they used Blackwater aka Academi, tens of thousands of them.
