ATC error forces Michelle Obama's plane to go around

A White House plane with first lady Michelle Obama onboard narrowly avoided a collision with a 200-ton military cargo jet after an air traffic controller made a mistake, forcing her aircraft to abort its landing at Andrews Air Force Base, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

All's well that ends well!

"Near miss" is one of those phrases that sticks a bit funny in my thoughts, partially because it is a peeve with my father - his opinion is that a "near miss" is actually indicative of a hit, as it nearly missed but didn't...

Another thing that sticks funny in my thoughts is this:

said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak for their agencies.
Speaking on something you're not authorized to speak on... is pretty much "gossip," isn't it?

It wasn't a "near miss", they wanted a 5 mile distance between the two planes during their landings and there was only 3 miles. They didn't want the second plane (first lady's) to get caught up in the wake of the first plane during it's landing.

Near only counts in horseshoes and grenades.
