Christiania Closes

Once of my favorite destinations in Europe and one of the most unique places I've ever been to. Was planning a trip back at some point but I guess not any more.

It's only closed to tourists. It still operates as a commune.

It's cool for aged hippies but their teenage children think it's less cool.

Re: Christiania Closes

Was there a few weeks ago and was througherly disappointed. Basically just a dirty run-down dump. I think the original hippies all fled (or went back to "normal" life) years ago and what was left seems to have lost the original purpose.

Re: Christiania Closes

Aw, I was always curious to see this since I know similar communities elsewhere..(smaller scale, though). Bummer.

On the other hand, it is mostly this that makes little autonomous communities fail (I was in one 20 years ago that didn't make it because of this), people in and out, constantly. I would hate to have tourists gawking at me, when I am trying to make some life philosophy materialize, etc. Must have been a headache.

Re: Christiania Closes

I've only been once---just over 2 years ago, and was blown away. Always planned to return, but I also heard stories of losing it's 'roots'.

Mental images of the 'market' will be forever burned into my head. Like a kid in a candy store. Stress just melted away there.
