http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...iving-ban.html

if it wasn’t real it could be funny…

Really? It gets much worse than women not being allowed to drive. Saudi Arabia has a terrible record on women's rights and human rights in general. I think you'll be in for a shock if you do a bit more digging.

I bet they have a lot less accident and cars taking several hours to parallel park though.

Roads with no women drivers on them ? I struggle to think of a more well thought out policy.

I bet the insurance premiums are cheap over there.

Girls not being allowed out of a burning building because a man might have been inflamed with passion at the site of some naked female flesh - like a nose, or suchlike.

Re: Saudi Law Against Driving - for females only

I've been to Saudi a few times and I don't see women not being allowed to drive as relevant. If I was a woman in Saudi the only thing on my mind would be getting the hell out of there. Women not being able to drive in Saudi is like a criminal complaining that the electric chair is too uncomfortable.

Can i groan at you for half the post? Women are involved in lot less accidents than men.

But i agree that most women (me included) are horrible at parking. I can park in tight places but parallel park? I wont even try

No.It looks like that in that country the parking spots for women are in the back of the parking where it's dark and where no one can hear you scream....

Great let's invent the "half groan". It will worth 50% of the normal groan.
Its for those post which you are not happy with but not completely unhappy.

interestingly, this is not true - women do actually have more crashes but they have less serious ones, just prangs. Men have statistically less crashes but when they do crash it they tend to total the car.

Iran is a lot more progressive. Women are encouraged to drive (pink cars with extra loud parking sensors) :

Re: Saudi Law Against Driving - for females only

I am a Saudi guy that lived here in Saudi Arabia all my life and trust me most women are ok with what's happening here.

All the malls here have a sign that says "Families only" which translate to: If you want to get inside this mall you need to be in the company of a woman.

Also the same rule is in place for all Amusement Parks around here, except the fact only women with/without the company of small children are allowed to enter (Based on the child height not age, stupid ain't it?).

Males (especially Teenagers and Adults) don't have as much to do inside the the main cities, so most of them get away by gathering at Shesha/Hookah Cafes (And in the capital city in Riyadh, Shesha isn't allowed inside the city, so the Cafes rented buildings on the outskirts of the city), and the only place they can sit in the city is the Cafes (the normal ones that doesn't serve shesha).

Now, I agree there's some men around here that treat their wives and sisters like shit, but these are special cases, and that happens elsewhere in the world.

Don't trust what mainstream media says, and not just about Saudi Arabia but about everything, their main priority is $$.

And P.S. most women here are ok with the Abaya, and their being "creative" with their design.

Lets not trust some reputable news agencies but lets trust some random guy on the internet.

As for most women are ok.. hmm i dont think so. I wouldnt be ok with needing permission from a male relative to leave the house or be educated.

Then again, if thats what they have known all their lives...

it seems strangely coincidental that it's always a bloke from these regions saying "yeah the wormen, they're absolutely fine with it - love it, in fact.", not the women themselves.

Assuming they are allowed to speak, of course.

Ok with it? Ask that to the 14 years old who got married to the 70 year old dude as the third wife...

Or at the girl her dad drowned in the family pool because she was ''rebelling" against the forced marriage he wanted for her.

Should I talk about the amount of maids from Phillipines or somewhere else who get daily raped by the male members of a same family?

How is the state of excision there?

You have internet and have the chance to spend time on the English Forum, use this time to also educate yourself of the reality of women in your country.

Exemples like I gave you are not rare nor exceptions. It is being a woman in your country. Men denying the reality of women in your country are also not rare nor exceptions....

Sadly.

What makes it so "reputable"? They always exaggerate the news they air,

Didn't say you need to trust me (me the random person, thank you), just said what was in my chest.

About the women, I bet you didn't live here to judge, not all women get the permission to leave the house, many of them have their own drivers around here and go freely to wherever they want to.

Look, they'll disagree with some ideas to change the society yes, but most don't want drastic changes in the society.

They are allowed to speak if they want in the media, as I have said if you believe the media, you'll be getting the wrong ideas about us, and it's not about being happy or not about it.

Not saying you have to believe me either, I didn't force you to, but do your research well next time, also the best thing is to experience the life here to get the right idea instead of trusting the Western Media in general.

But I doubt you'll visit Saudi Arabia after all.

We have our own Traditions and Religion, and I assume you have your own, you don't want us to force you to follow ours, neither we want to follow yours (in general, there's exceptions always), otherwise, humans won't be as interesting.

And, don't "generalise".

Been around women of my country, now look, it's like those accidents you mention you assumed it happens in every household here, but in reality you're just mentioning some accidents which can happen in any country no matter how free or safe or educated the country is.

It's not like I am happy with what's happening here either and I wish some stuffs to change, but you and other members (and most importantly the media) exaggerate such stuff to the extreme.

Not trying to deny but that's the fact.
