Denmark Suspended Schengen Over Illegals/Refugee Influx

Here is the very brief announcement in English.

Wow, I wonder are other countries going to follow suit? I also wonder how much my fiancee and I will get stopped going and coming from Germany and Austria (because of me int he car, as I stand out).

Re: Denmark Suspended Schengen Over Illegals/Refugee Influx

I was reading it here, having just come back from Copenhagen with another trip scheduled soon ( I'll likely have to apply for a visa this time around, being non-EU ).

Quote:
Denmark thus went ahead with tighter border controls before a possible EU decision on the matter.

Re: Denmark Suspended Schengen Over Illegals/Refugee Influx

Wow -- very surprised to hear that news. Could be the end for Schengen (and other Euro-treaties) if member countries can just unilaterally withdraw (and presumably resume) whenever they feel like it.

I assume the Danes have also renounced their own rights under Schengen, then? All Danes in Switzerland will now have to obtain non-EU-style work visas?

(Note sarcastic smiley, for those who need graphic prompts. Denmark hasn't suspended Schengen at all -- they are simply increasing their border guard presence and still operating entirely within Schengen. Just as Switzerland does; Swiss border guards are always far more active, "randomly" stopping cars, than their counterparts at the same checkpoints.)

More info on Denmark's actions here, and the back-story on the tightening of border controls within Schengen here.

Re: Denmark Suspended Schengen Over Illegals/Refugee Influx

I think it applies only to non-EUs ( who really desired the Schengen flexibility ) as EU nationals have bilateral treaties with CH for freedom of movement.

Yes -- the bilateral treaty to which you refer is the Schengen agreement!

Re: Denmark Suspended Schengen Over Illegals/Refugee Influx

According to BBC news they have not suspended Schengen at all. They are introducing new customs checks manned by customs officers to track and spot-check people crossing the boarder. All within Schengen still.

Correct.....

Election is coming up and this is just to accommodate the voters as open boarders has been a big issue in regards to "unwanted" nationalities.

Re: Denmark Suspended Schengen Over Illegals/Refugee Influx

I am from Denmark and are a little bit ashamed over this; anyway the big things up here North are criticism from especially Sweden. But many people do not notice that Sweden already have customs control through the borders to Denmark (which is the ferry line from Elsinore til Helsingborg and after the Oresund bridge). The custom control is only done once in a while.

As far as I have understood this is what Denmark is going to do across our land borders to Germany and sea borders to Sweden and Norway. I am sure that the control will be harsher to the Danish side.

There will also be installed video surveillance at the border crossings.

Yet again, this is custom control and control over illegal immigrants not mandatory passport control. Usually one is obligated to be able to identify one wherever one are if asked for id from the Police.

This just means they will stop you more often if you are not blond.

It doesn't mean you don't have the right to go there, it just means they will ask you to prove it.

I have nothing against it if they check everybody but when 'random' checks are based solely on your skin color I get a little touchy.

They've got a cheek!

It was a different story when they were pouring into England in their thousands, stealing our women and farms.

I suppose we can expect the Italians to follow suit, then!

Nothing new, init? Switzerland is also part of Schengen, but still has border patrol. Although officially it's called customs.

But it is part of Schengen -- which is the point made by posters above.

Point taken, but a customs union and a free-movement agreement is not quite the same.

Switzerland just joined Schengen a year ago... but on you: My wife "stands out" as well and we never had any issue about that at the border. They look at your permit and it's finished. I cannot even say that they took us out more often than others at all and frankly were the controls far more after smuggled goods than people. So if you are a Swiss family and you drive a station wagon on a Saturday afternoon back home (when most people go shopping cross border) you are probably far more likely to get checked than a black guy in a visibly empty car.

That's the thing... those 'random' checks are to make sure you have a permit.

silly exercise: next time you take the train to Germany follow the guys in uniform. Who are the people asked to show their passports?
