There are Britons in Berlin who get taken aback by the directness of Germans. And there are Germans who get really annoyed when Britons (and Americans), in an effort to appear friendly, say things they don't really mean. Some Germans call this "lying".


So next time a German lady says "Does my bum look big in this..." , lay it on thick.

How on Earth can German husbands live with German wives without small talk and 'feigned' interest ???

Maybe they actually love them...

Some women actually preffer honesty to a feigned interest. Better to hear "your hair looks like a cow munched on it" than going into the street without combing the hair because husband said "you look... original".

Meh. You're talking about a bad hair day. Different if your significant other rolls over in bed for the 900th morning in a row and says "you're still horrifically ugly dear and I'm slowly falling out of love for you. Have a great day!".

Then it would be my own fault for letting myself get married to someone based on looks In any case, better realize the guy is a morron after 900 mornings, than keep living a British lie for the sake of apperance.

Ah yes, but that was in wartime ... or does the same apply to married couples? This is an interesting topic, as I am married to a German whose 'bluntness' is sometimes quite breathtaking.

With regards to the sunbed debate - I love the way the article trys to justify it by comparing the German's efficiency with the British sense of fair play!! That is one way of looking at it ... (and, to this day, my husband absolutely refutes the existence of this phenonom ... even though most of the world seems to know about it ...)

Sorry, I fail to see a difference

Hey I´m divorced, I kept telling my tutonic bird that as she grows older and wrinklier I will look more and more distinguished. Still working on distinguished but I don´t call her "walnut woman" behind her back for nothing.

In war, both warring parties have a fair chance.

both start with a declaration, involve years of misery and ends through either bloodshed or capitulation on one side...

I thought this was an urban myth too, but I have actually witnessed this 1st hand in a hotel in Crete. During breakfast, the son from one of the German families would head down to the pool area and distribute half a dozen towels on the best-placed sun-loungers.

...and trying to enter the other one without warning will not be tolerated.

In that war, we broke their Enigma code, but they failed to break through our far simpler use of colloquial English and ryming slang.

It would require a far more powerful computer to break the code in which women speak. That computer has yet to be invented.

On the other hand, it is now the German directness that is economically saving Europe's ass, while the British sing "Lie to me"...
