Re: Americans: Foreigners who want to talk politics - boring, annoying or harmless?

Question to the OP. Why "Americans" specifically? Why not anyone who faces foreigners trying to talk to them about their domestic politics. I'm sure Chinese, South Koreans, Saudis, Russians etc face it a lot too.

A show about women running around in their underwear is just as bad as making fun of genocide?

The clip was in poor taste, and irrelevant to the discussion.
No Benny Hill features as an old man he makes sexual jokes about school girls in uniform, people of African descent, Germans and the Fatherland, etc. he is of course popular in Switzerland.

Comedy is not irrelevant it is hugely politicized which is why at court there was of course a jester, a major tool for Shakespeare.

Two reasons:

  • The thread which inspired this thread was about Americans;
  • I suspect Americans get it in the ear more than most people, as their country is more important than anyone else's (and subject to a fair bit of fashionable disapproval in Europe).
I did invite contributions from citizens of other countries, but I don't think any of them have responded yet.

Is that relevant?

Please stop derailing the thread with your tasteless "comedy".
And you ask what happens when foreigners want to ask about American politics?

For the East coast and many American Jews this comedy is their cup of tea. Don't ask of you don't want the answer.

OK perhaps more to your taste.

More to my taste would be an intelligent contribution to the thread.

There's already a Youtube of the Day thread for this kind of rubbish.

As, to date, 16% of voters have said that they would rather discuss something other than American politics, this thread has predictably gone off at a bit of tangent, as many threads do ...

I am unsure as to what the thread is getting at. Have you ever had a problem asking Americans about politics? It sounds to me as if you have a bee in your bonnet. OK, but I thought that you view of Americans was that most are not that knowledgeable- especially when it comes to politics. Anyway, I guess it won't be long before you call me a stupid bint again to try to get me to shut up.

About "I did invite contributions from citizens of other countries, but I don't think any of them have responded yet?"

I wonder why?

Choose from
1. Title of the thread is "Americans....", might discourage non - Americans?
2. Title of thread continues "Foreigners who want to talk politics - boring, annoying or harmless?" I suppose it is remotely possible that citizens of other countries are discouraged from participating by this title?
3. Citizens of other countries fall asleep before they have read all through the contributions?
4. (Opportunity for others to postulate possible reasons)

Well, whoever you ask you'd expect the answer to be highly culturally determined - so if you are trying to learn something (as opposed to jump-start a debate) it makes sense to focus your polling, right?

Anyway I wouldn't give a penny for all the rationalizations above. All smokescreen and flapdoodle if you ask me. What I heard was that DB is married to an American and (quite understandably) anxious to ascertain whether he's got hold of a weirdo or a normal one.

Well, I would guess whatever the nationality of the girl he'd have gotten aholda she'da been a weird one. So the question is mute really. And that is a good thing.
