You are either very misguided or a complete liar.

I grew up around the men and women you refer to as "worse than rapists" and I can tell you, your blanket statement is a reeking offense.

I do congratulate you on one thing though, I'm so pissed off at some lying asshole on the internet that I can hardly think straight. What a f'n prick you are.

Hi Peg,
It's not worth it. Really. Get up and walk away. There are better posters to respond to.

What confuses me is that Uphatters is getting married soon but he doesn't seem to be a happy, in-love man at all.

There are people that would kill to solve a problem and those that would talk. Mine is the view of a very healthy happy mind. Not the dark soul of a someone that would defend a killer.

About "It's starts getting nasty"
Well NATO is all about killing people for good or bad reasons so "nasty" is somewhere/somehow implied

Ich gehe saufen & essen!!
I meant it was getting nasty on the EF

The NATO, kind of organization is not there to babysit enemy with candies and marsmallows but rather react quick in emergency and respond with violence. That's imminent cost of any military operation. There is always somone who is gonna get hurt. Price of any military intervention everywhere.

P.S. Sitting at the lake in Küssnacht, looking at the waves and ducks in the water and sipping beer while enjoying the peace (guaranteed by NATO)

As a veteran and voluntary service member of my nation's military, I do not appreciate being compared to a rapist or someone who enjoys killing. But I'm also a free-thinking individual, and I do not support the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya or Yemen.

LOL, as LondonAl correctly stated, the US did not want to get into Libya, that was an effort lead initially by the French, then backed by the Brits, THEN LASTLY by Washington.

Some how I think that if the U.S. packed it all up and went home, from every base in the world and ONLY protected our own, there would be more than one nation on earth begging us to keep troops around.

Then again, who knows, maybe the world would be much safer and more stable because, you know, there is absolutely no military threat in the world but the U.S. The U.S. is the worst of all..
An american tea bagger/wingnut/neocon/exceptionalist/whatever even here in switzerland! What a pleasant surprise, you guys are clearly breaking your boundaries by traveling abroad. This may be good for all of us in the end...

Hey, by the way, how does it feel to be an "immigrant"?

Re: NATO Kaput?

let's face it, the US military isn't around the work simply to hand candy to children. war is an extension of politics and the US military is there to further US interests.

whether the local population wants foreign soldiers in their country or not is largely irrelevant as they effectively have no say on this. many of the countries are simply pawns in a bigger game.

Historically, neutrality is byproduct of wars and conflicts until somone figured out that there is more clever way of staying out of such

All true.

The question is: would we rather be pawns of the United States or Russia or China?

Or someone figured out that it was easier to let his neighbours do the fighting on his behalf.

Common sense and reason soon kick in. Sadly , 1000's of years gone by and there are still bullies in the World's playground.

There always will be.

And as long as powerful nations and empires exist, there will be military alliances established to face those powerful nations and empires.

The United States itself began as such an alliance, as did Switzerland.

What's the alternative? Meditation?

Interesting question. The last century has effectively been under Pax Americana, but when you consider the recent wars fought and people killed, I wonder if China and their non-interference policy would have been a better choice.

Does China genuinely have a non-interference policy, or is it just very subtle with its interference?

(Except in Tibet, of course, where it's as subtle as a sledgehammer)

Sanctions (or positive economic incentives) diplomacy, dialogue, understanding, education.

When all else fails, or hasn't been tried, then yes, off go the dogs of war.

Doesn't make it right though, and should never detract us from find alternative solutions. Relying on Military might is in my eyes a complete failure of the society that subsidises it.

I often wonder how many overseas friends the US would have, if it spent it's military budget on schools, education, hospitals etc in developing nations. There would be far less anti-American sentiment and little reason to be attacked.

None of which means anything without a credible military threat flexing its muscles at the rear.

"Speak softly and carry a big stick," as the saying goes.
